I have my State Farm Homeowner's bill on my desk. Location MS. All loss deductible 1/2% or $1000 minimum deductible. No separate wind/hail/hurricane/named storm deductible.

It’s also normal that people do understand risk, work in the insurance industry, know their options, and still get denied what they are owed.

Shouldn’t someone who works in the insurance industry know the company’s reputation regarding payouts before they buy a policy?

I mean, customer service is part of what you pay for, on top of the intrinsic value of the policy. While that intrinsic value is certainly “math” as slackster mentioned, I would expect that the quality of customer service varies significantly between companies. Ultimately you either prioritize fast, convenient payouts when choosing a policy or you don’t.

Practice first party property along the gulf coast. Defend the “bad guys” on a daily basis but fully understand the game.

General thoughts:

There’s a reason all the case law involves State Farm—they suck. Fight em.

Who cares about the deductible in the grand scheme of the things. Just make your claim that much higher. It ain’t hard.

Squeaky wheel almost always gets the $$$$ in this arena. Bitch about everything. You’ll get more. Rattle off a bunch of crap about needing shite for matching and continuation. Say you feel like you’re being low-balled. Might have to get an attorney, etc. Public adjuster. Threats!

Put everything thing in writing with adjuster. Lay a paper trail and document.

Read your policy. Mold probably subject to absolute exclusion or sublimit. Don’t claim shite not covered. Don’t set yourself up for partial denial.

More buzz words: Laura EXACERBATED the damage, structure shifted, roof tabs lifted, nail pops, bad faith!

When in doubt, call Houghtaling.

Find you an agent that shops around. State Farm is a joke.

Does it benefit the citizenry for insurance companies to be able to subsidize the insurance commissioners campaign?

You're paying less a month but have a higher deductible. Ask your agent for the flat deductible. I had UPC and mine was $1k. Paid an extra $6 a month.

So less insurance for the same money.

They also probably upped your home value so the deductible goes higher but you did not feel a large increase in your monthly bill. They are looking out for you. They are keeping your bill lower while covering less and with less exposure. Kinda like that bullshite tort reform bill the legislature just passed.

I'm assuming that 2% or 5% has to be paid prior to any payout by the insurance company?

If so, that could put some folks looking at a complete rebuild in a bind.

They basically pay out the claim minus the deductible. A contractor can ask for more money if they can justify it.

I am late to the party but that 5% deductible makes my job easy to pick up policies.

I have all of my personal lines written through an Independent Insurance agent.

The agent there understands that I am willing to accept a little risk for some savings on my policies.

I have a 10% named storm Deductible but the premiums I've saved over the past ~12 years could pay the 10% several times over. (Add to it TVM and I'm winning even more)

Unrelated:
Louisiana folks: Get a GL Umbrella on top of your regular GL policy for Home & Vehicles. It's relatively cheap and especially if you have kids driving may come into play.

What do you know about upc?

Great company to deal with. They are reinsured to the hilt so I am not worried about their solvency. I have my personal home insured with them and I sell insurance for a living.

I'm surprised this hasn't been talked about more on here but a lot of folks in the state didn't realize that State Farm has a 2 or 5% hurricane deductible for named storms.

You have to be kidding. What idiot does not know that most all insurance companies have Named Storm Deductibles. They have been there sine Katrina and used to be as high as 10-15 % back then. There are a few out there now that have 0 NSDs but not many and none of the major ones.

State Farm has the deductible clearly stated on their policies
It's not just in the policy. You get multiple mailings on it.

In just to say State Farm is a terrible insurer and treats its insured customers like dirt. I suspect most could say that about their insurers. However, I have never seen it worse than with State Farm.
