Starting a new career in your 40’s. Have you done it? Ideas and advice needed.

We all know this is the perfect place to ask for serious advice on major life changes so here goes.
I’m a 44 year old white male. Graduated from LSU in 1999 with BS in Marketing. Worked as a business manager for 18 years for a medium sized healthcare practice. (Hiring and training employees, marketing the practice, accounting work, IT work, and managing 10-12 employees). Got tired of this job and I moved to Southeast Asia three years ago and opened a franchise business. It’s a small, boutique fitness studio. We’ve been open almost two years and it’s a profitable business. We are growing, but it’s a slow process. I’m the owner/manager and it’s a full time job.
My wife and I are going to let her brother run the business and we are moving to New Orleans. We want to be closer to my family and also I want to make extra money so I can pay back my business loans quickly.
Looking to change career paths again. I would prefer not to sit in an office all day. I’m thinking about possibly an outside sales job. Even considering selling insurance. Open to other possibilities like real estate agent, etc. I don’t mind driving around all day. I’m honestly just looking for a way to make $80,000 or more a year and am very open to considering a lot of possibilities.
Come on OT, what do you suggest? I’ve been selling gym memberships for two years and am pretty good at it. Not a shy person and very motivated. Just want to hear some stories from you with experience in this type of situation. Thanks

I can drive a 23 foot bay boat...
Been fishing and driving small boats since I was 12 but that's about it. Do tugboat drivers do well?

Sorry not much help with your question.

Get a TWIC and an OSHA card, pass clean on a hair follicle, and be at the gate for 0530. You'll have all the fresh air a man could want in South La and the over time pay will help make your minimum easy.

How long does this take? This is actually the kind of ideas I'm looking for. How long are the days. How many hours per week?

OSHA card in a day and the TWIC depends on the timing. Sometime a few weeks other times longer. I was joking, but if you know some industrial contractors and can pick up a specialty or can otherwise be helpful at a job site there's always work and it doesn't have to be terrible.

Friend,
I may soon be in need of a sales manager for my TulaneLSU Poorboy Tours of New Orleans. We are a small company thus far: I am the captain and my friend has pledged to be the driver. Once the Ford 350 minibus repairs are complete the tours will begin. I have little doubt it will be a success and have received quite an outpouring of requests for franchising. Would you be interested?

Not sure why you are
If you want to
If you don’t have a job lined up. Seems like much better choices out there to achieve this goal.

Say you'll open a Powerhouse Gym, sell memberships to said gym, and then never open said gym ever

Some ‘neck told my son the other day that diesel mechanics can right their own ticket these days and tried to tell him college was dumb. Maybe look into that field.

Sales is probably the best route. I’d steer clear of insurance and real estate with what you’re saying. Both take a while to build up, especially insurance. I’d search and apply to all B2B sales jobs you can find.

I don’t think you can make this happen without going back to school or being extremely patient and forgiving of other people’s views.
Career change means you give up experience which means you also give that up as a negotiation tool when discussing salary. I tried this when I was 31 and thought my teaching experience and master’s degree would parlay into something making north of $50k. I was told point blank by someone who owned a successful ad agency that companies had no incentive to hire me as an entry level employee at a respectable salary when they could pay a 22 year old squirt $35k and work the hell out of them. They would be young, ambitious to learn, and have no responsibilities outside of work.
Someone middle aged is most likely married, most likely with children, and most likely understanding that work is not life.
So you’re asking for too much IMO. Either give up the career change and go for business management at a health care company for $80k or go for a career change and give up the idea that you’ll make $80k in a new field any time soon.
