Today, my students are taking an online "practice" test that simulates the type of questions that they will see on iLeap in May. We are supposed to use the data gathered on these practice tests to reinforce weaknesses that we see. All good in theory. Problem is, these practice tests have no impact on the student or their grade in any way. Many students give little to no effort, making their data useless. This goes for the actual PARCC (Math and ELA) and iLeap (Science and Social Studies) that will will give in April/May.

However, the state dept. of education uses these test scores as almost the sole means of determining our effectiveness as teachers. Imagine if your job performance was based on how well someone else did something, when that someone had nothing to motivate them to do that something well.

Can you offer some kind of incentive?

Like if they score X or above you give them bonus points or something?

It all started to go downhill right around the time I graduated from high school. They started instituting bench mark exams every nine weeks for underclassmen.

Those were the most pointless exams imaginable.

Also, in before standardized tests are culturally biased.

Education will not get better until we learn that

cultivating strengths > reinforcing weakness

Why are your students doing so poorly on the test? Sounds like the standardized tests are exposing your lack of effectiveness as an educator.

I'll be giving those in mid-April. Useless.

All of this amounts to a lot of lost instructional time, especially for math and ELA teachers. I estimate that they spend at least 20 instructional days per year doing standardized testing or "practice" standardized testing.

I was thinking more along the lines of a tradition, legal incentive. But I guess when all else fails...

Employees are motivated by a paycheck and they are usually adults. We are talking about children and all they get is a grade on a piece of paper, many of them have parents who don't care whether they get an F or an A.

I teach high school and it is a bit better because we use the EOC test as their Final Exam grade so those do mean something and do carry weight.

Actually, I've been rated "highly effective" since the ratings began. Guess what you get when you achieve the highest rating. An annual bonus of....wait for it....$150.

Glad I went to private school pre-k through high school. PSAT and ACT were the only standardized tests I ever took prior to college.

The actual exams, but the incentive for the students to do well is the same on both. Zero. We've tried things, like rewards for those reaching certain levels, but it hasn't made much of an impact.

I remember taking the CAT and LEAP tests in school. The LEAP was always easy as hell.
