Before hurricane season? That starts Monday. It will take months to get one installed
That said, it’s a great feeling having a whole house generator waiting outside

Did you have a ground rod?

Because don't.

No because it’s right by the main panel and tied into that ground. I think it was just a freak thing but it sucked. Had to replace the control panel and brush assembly. Slip ring needed to be cleaned up too. It was a real pita finding parts during a hurricane recovery. I got lucky and one of the solar companies I used to finance for is a Generac dealer and hooked me up with parts.

Thinking about getting one before Hurricane season

My parents are in a good financial position so it was an easy decision to get one. My dad is difficult about everything so he had to put it exactly where he wanted it and it's in a not great place. Think the company who installed checks it every so often as per a plan and it runs for 5 minutes every Wednesday.

They like the insurance and my brother lives close so if they lose power he can go over there with his wife and kids.

I have no idea the expense but I'm sure you can finance 0% interest from a ton of these companies

Does it actually makes sense for the amount of times it’s really used? No

But for those times it’s really needed and used, it’s pretty damn priceless.

Stay away from KOHLER and A-Lectric Co. and Contracting out of Shreveport. Horrible.

My vote is a portable Tri fuel inverter.

I have a 9500 watt. Can be serviced easily. 3 fuel choices. Not locked into some BS Generac contract or service. Can parallel 2 together for heavy loads and cut back to one for most of the day. Have another for backup if needed.

If the hurricane wipes out your house, stay at a family members place and run their stuff.

Interlock with a generator quick connect. Done.

I have a 3600w Ecoflow solar powered power station connected to a transfer switch plus a 6250w generator connected to an interlock switch. I have about four thousand invested in everything.

My next door neighbor has a 15kw "portable" that runs his central A/C, hot water heater and microwave. Best of all their food didn't spoil.

My wife say we're getting one after this last ice storm as it was freaking misirable.

HIs produces more power when using gasoline. Propane is more like 12 kw.

I am retired and my wife and I have some mobility issues. We live in a subdivision north of Houston. We bought our 24 K Generac through Costco and got a $900 gift card rebate from Costco. Generator Supercenter in Tomball handled the instalation. Total price for the unit and the install less the gift card came to $13K. I pay $40 per month for service contract. They come out once a year for oil changes and all maintenance. I put all of it on the Costco credit card for the extra 1% rebate to max out the savings. Unit runs on aautomatice test cycle once a week for 5 minutes.

Since we got it, we have had maybe 6 outtages. The unit kicks on within 10 seconds of the power going out. It is a great investment if you are old and get around with either a cane or a walker.

I know one thing… my next house will be custom built and the Generac is at the top of my list of how we will roll our equity into the next house.

Yes - Absolutely worth it. Because I have a gas stove/oven, I have a 20 Kw Kohler generator that runs everything else. I got it in '22. Luckily there's not been a serious hurricane hit Baton Rougr since then, but I've occasionally had power outages for several hours and I've been glad to still have A/C or heat.

A few times when the generator had been on, I've been something of a dick because I have turned on my porch lights while the rest of the street is dark.

We put a 20kw Kohler in a couple years ago and it's been great. But FYI, Kohler sold their home generator business to private equity...

That first time when you wake up, just go through your routine, house is cool, everything works...then step out to a dark neighborhood.

Kinda cool. Not having to fight to get generators running when shite goes down. No gas to source.

There are far worse things to spend money on

Yall keep in mind that you can get a portable welding machine for less than a generac.
