A sergeant with the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office was killed and a New Orleans Police Department officer was injured early Sunday while assisting in a pursuit on Interstate 10, authorities said.
quote:
The pursuit ended when the suspect's car crashed into a New Orleans Police Unit in Orleans Parish near I-10 and Crowder.
quote:
Sgt. Grant Candies' death, saying the sergeant was deploying a spike strip near the Oak Harbor exit when he was fatally struck by the fleeing suspect’s vehicle earlier that morning.
quote:
a nine-year veteran of the Sheriff's Office who also served in the U.S. Marine Corps.

quote:
Candies began working with the Sheriff's Office nearly a decade ago and was promoted to sergeant in 2023. That same year he was named STPSO deputy of the year. He was married and had two children, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Damn. Sad news.
Deploying spike strips is an art form and dangerous. Often, they like to throw spike strips right in front of the fleeing vehicle so the driver doesn’t have time to evade them.

St Tammany is a shite hole

You meant to say Nola is, not St. Tammany. The juveniles are usually from Nola.
They always drive to the Northshore and commit their crimes, then head back to New Orleans.

What do you think of New Orleans?

Will still take them a while to reach Nola status. Should just nuke it and start over somewhere else

We have lost way to many officers deploying these things. I refused to use them because of the danger to the deploying officer

St. Tammany, Tangi and Washington Parishes have problems, but nothing compared to the ghetto trash that resides in New Orleans. That’s a fact.

Seems like a business opportunity to build a remote deploying device. There is nothing fundamentally difficult about the concept.

Really question the logic of the spike strip. If they were headed back to New Orleans cut them off on the twin span. There’s no reason to risk your life right before the twin span entrance. Only one way in and out of that bridge.
Sad story, but the people in the car are totally screwed for a long time.
St Tammany should send a message. I know Jefferson, St. Bernard, and St. Charles are all hoping they do.

If we can snipe hogs from a moving helicopter we should be able to blow the brains out of juveniles who run from the cops in the same manner
