re: St. Tammany residents: how do you feel about the proposed Slidell casino?

Zoning issues remain. Mandeville lakefront not same zoning as this property.
Sorry but I’m going to avail myself of every barrier I can before I leave it to the St. Tammany Zoning Comission or the Parish Council as the last line of defense on something like this lol. Those clowns have destroyed the Parish.

If done right, casinos can be a great source of entertainment, atmosphere, and bring in amazing revenue. Yuppies on the West of the parish won’t complain about the tax dollars being shared with the entire parish. The problem is I have no faith that it won’t be more of a bloated truck stop with some slot machines. Seriously though if they made it like some of the “neighborhood casinos in Vegas (the ones off the strip) it could actually be a net plus for the parish.
If someone has a concern as far as what happens to a decent area that adds a casino, they can look right across the Pearl River. Hancock County has nice schools because of casino revenue. The area doesn’t look like a crack ville. On top of that there are 2 casinos there, and some their revenue comes from the casino degenerates from St.Tammany Parish. If they can get a percentage of that revenue, it will be a win. If someone wants to gamble they will travel.
The casino will provide several hundred new jobs in the area.
Also, it will provide a source of entertainment and leisure with the proposed boat docks and food venues.
Another aspect to look out for is the opposition and who is lining them, the city of Kenner asked its legislators to oppose the proposed vote because it would affect Kenner’s revenue from people from St. Tammany going gamble in Kenner.
Then you had the owners of the Silver Slipper try to get the gaming control board to dismiss the move on a technicality and try to rebid the license. Why because it could kill a substantial part of their business from customers from St. Tammany who will have to travel less to get to a casino.
This project, if done right, has the potential to be a game changer on the coast. It would be a better accessible casino than the 2 in Hancock County because of its proximity to I10. With the coming, on site wagering on sports that too will drive traffic to the site.
Yes there are problems associated with gambling. But it is your choice to gamble and how much.

You wanna live in Kenner or Hancock county? Go right ahead.

You're right. Lets just build another strip mall with the Parishes 573rd Dollar General there instead. That'll definitely boost our economy.

You act as if St. Tammany is poor. It is likely the most wealthy parish in the state and not terribly in need of some cure that will be worse than the disease.

No I'm acting as if StTP has no major economic generators in the area besides strip malls, WalMart, gas stations, and Dollar General. Most of the wealth is brought into the area from other parishes - it'd be nice to have a business here that generates jobs for locals and tax revenue from people coming in from other parishes.
Like everyone keeps saying - if you're opposed to this, then give suggestions on what else you'd like to see there. It's either going to be the casino or more temp storage warehouses like what has popped up in Pearl River, which will likely be abandoned in a few years just like all of the shopping centers on Gause and Airport Rd.

The things Pearl River bad because of casino revenue is what St Tammany has without it. They also don’t have to deal with Louisiana politics in Pearl River.
It’s a moot point anyway because it’s going to fail miserably.

This is the kind of thinking that has kept the blight of the outlet mall and NSSq still sitting around empty instead of being bulldozed and revitalized into something useful for the city.
But, the snobs in the western half of the parish don't care - they just don't want it next to their overpriced subdivisions in the swamp. Don't spend any money on Slidell, keep spending millions on our strip malls!

This is an intentional move by the owner AFAIK.

quote:So what if the residents make their money in other parishes? St. Tammany has always been seen as an escape from the busy city. This parish has the lowest unemployment in the state, how many locals need jobs? Those jobs are probably avaiable now.

In Slidell? I don't care.
I'm sure it will make I-12 traffic even worse, but I live in Old Mandeville and try to stay away from Slidell. I'm indifferent.

Don't forget car washes. There are two being built in Slidell, one right around the corner from an existing one.

It is not just about one Slidell casino. It is a vote to allow casinos into the parish in general. That old concrete plant area used to build the Causeway is the next spot.

St Tammany is a lost cause. Mandeville used to be perfect. Now it’s Lil St Bernard. Sad!

It isn't that bad...yet.
