Yeah, I'm really confused. St. Tammany makes you be low income to attend their public schools? That is .. weird.

I just questioned that it was "a lot" for someone with a kid. It might be too much to get taxpayer paid lunch but it's not exactly like those people are wealthy by any stretch

They are middle class. They certainly aren't poor and in need of welfare.

I get what you're saying, but schools usually go ahead and use the standard federal income eligibility guidelines for anything regarding family incomes. So FT is right. $50k is too high for even a family of 4.

I dont understand the question

I think St Tammany Parish offers free Pre-K to kids from certain income brackets. Parents with higher incomes can pay to send their kids to St Tammany Parish Pre-K programs.

I don't know what the income cutoff is for free pre-k, but I think it's pretty low.

What would them being above free lunch eligibility have to do with going to a public school?

I assume this particular parish requires you to be low income to attend their public pre-k. If they do, I'd say its pretty likely they're using federal guidelines. Free/reduced %s are used in all kinds of official reporting.

I imagine a host of issues could arise if a school was deciding the arbitrary income limit on their own..

We had to send our son to pre k at mandeville because Madisonville was filled up with low incomes. Cost us 500 a month. It was worth it. Went to Madisonville for K. Place is garbage

In order to qualify for St. Tammany Parish Public School Pre K at no cost, families must provide one of the following documents to determine income eligibility:

Food Stamp Eligibility letter (SNAP), noting case certification period and the child’s name
Two consecutive check stubs within two months of completing income verification for each working adult supporting the family. Eligibility is based on total household income
Monetary Determination Letter from the Workforce Commission of LA, if unemployed
Current foster care placement agreement from DCFS

As stated by another poster, many districts use the federal poverty guidelines to determine eligibility for tuition-free pre-k. Most districts also offer pre-k that parents have to pay tuition for, but I’m not sure if all do. ETA: St. Tammany’s site says “Families who do not meet income eligibility may be charged monthly tuition based on a sliding scale.”

985-898-3306 is the number to the St. Tammany Pre-K office.

My daughter's going through Pre-K testing right now.

Apparently they take into account how much extra work the child needs to be prepared for kindergarten, as well as, parents' income and parents' education level to fill up the spots.

Our school nearby has 20 spots for 28 kids.

My wife and I are screwed.

Pro tip:

If your kid tests for, and passes the gifted screening for pre-k they can go for free. Also, any Disabilities/needs like speech therapy etc can land you an automatic spot, for free, as well.

Public school pre-k usually has income restrictions. Now, if you're like me and pay sky high tuition, they can go to pre-pre-k if you want them to.

It is a requirement for every O-T thread related in any way to St. Tammany Parish to include a shite-slinging from the Western ST contingent against the Slidellians.

Avoiding taking sides, I offer for the board’s consideration (as information only) the newly-painted welcoming banner on I-12 to the Eastern end of St Tammany:

Pre-k isnt included in the (free) public school system but rather considered as "daycare". Low income individuals can send their children to public schools for pre-k (for free) while others have to find private means until kindergarten.

All of this info is correct. The only minor thing to add is that after special ed kids are added to the roster, then children under the federal poverty line are added. Then, if there are any slots left over, it’s first come first serve until al slots are filled with those parents paying tuition to attend. If you can get in, it’s much better and cheaper than daycare.
