If that plan were announced the teachers and their union would be on national tv inside of an hour proclaiming the need to return to school and how it's essential to a childs development.

And the cops should go on strike for a few weeks. by the end of July we'd be back to being America

I agree with this. That's why I didn't know why you were going nuts.

Never. It was a reminder of how much I respected Brees for his accolades on the field. Now it's a reminder to never give in to the PC Police and to always defend your principles. It's also a reminder of that fact that you never really know someone and you shouldn't look up to people you don't know personally.

m sure there are a lot of lazy ghetto arse teachers praying to teach from home and will turn around and demand a pay increase because 'it's harder'. of course it's harder, that's not how teaching is meant to be.

Thank you. That's what I was asking.

quote:

do know some inner city teachers and there are a good portion of them silently sitting there thinking the world has gone mad and will likely reevaluate their choice in profession after all of this.

That makes me sad man. All this will likely do is drive any good teachers away from public education and create a void filled with apathetic non-educators and the education gap will widen. It's fricking depressing man and I don't know what the solution is.

But I'm glad you took a deep breath and took a second to see where I was coming from.

Society today has gotten so emotionally unstable and reactionary you can't have a simple discussion anymore. It's like that Always Sunny skit about how to cut limes in the bar.

A national movement to defund and destroy police departments coupled with a national movement to end on campus learning spells horrific disaster for these poor inner-city kids. Children. It sucks.

No, but I'm assuming you're missing the point.

Why do we need teachers at every school if the kids are going to attend school online ?

It's actually counter intuitive to have more than one instructor teaching a subject if everyone attends school the same way. Record the lesson, everybody gets the same instruction. You need one teacher per subject for the entire district/state/country/language.

Yup. Teachers unions will realize this soon, and all of the sudden they'll be leading the charge to reopen.

Right now they are viewing it as a few months not having to manage a classroom, but it's actually an existential threat to public education as we have known it.

Why can't a teacher have an aide or an intern help out?

IF schools go virtual, then immediately cut faculty & staff. Lunch ladies gone - janitors gone - PE teachers, fine art/music, band directors - gone. Multiple teachers per grade aren't needed if the same lesson plan applies to every student in the entire grade. Bring in college education under-grads to grade work and answer questions.

CUT staff - CUT on-site operations and maintenance and watch how quick those folks with no paycheck find a way to get kids back on campus.

yep. and as someone who has a youngin' on the way. i don't even know where to start as far as looking at public education. we are fortunate in the sense we can likely afford to send ours the private route, but we shouldn't have to, that's part of the reason we have laid down roots in the Texas suburbs. That said, the solution is to kill teacher unions and "school choice" / vouchers is something we have to support with out votes going forward.

truth. i'm going to be a lost soul this Fall....if football happens. Until this group of Saints move on (Brees, Kamara, Thomas, etc). I'm done with them. I guess I'll follow and watch games based on who's on my fantasy roster or the teams my Tigers play for. Can't wait to see Burrow's Bengals, CEH prove himself at the next level with the Chiefs, and for Justin Jefferson to become a #1 WR for the Vikes.

We also have both spent waaaaaay too much time and energy on this website.

I have two. They're both in private school because at that private school the teachers and administrators and principle are beholden to and care for the people who pay the tuition. Without us paying tuition the school goes away and so they stay competitive and responsive to remain in business.

There are a few choices for good public schools around me but I would never send my kids there because I have absolutely no faith or trust in the government and because public schools have absolutely no care for the opinions or involvement of parents. Even failinghhorrific public schools just keep getting government funding without change.

The government just cannot outdo or supplant the private sector in almost anything.

Lunch ladies cook breakfast for low income areas. I don't see that being cut. Obviously you don't need the same amount of staff when virtual but to say cut 90% is just ridiculous.
Also, what happens in 2 months if they decide to go back to in class teaching but the teachers found other jobs?

A lot of responses in here are just short-sighted it seems.
One teacher is not going to be able to give timely feedback to a grade level with 150-200 students.
And to bring in someone who has never taught to help would likely just create more work for the teacher.

My wife teaches and she has been in meetings all summer about reopening.

I ask her if anyone ever presents the volume of peer reviewed studies that show this is not an issue for kids or schools.

Does anyone mention that schools have been open for months across the globe, many with no restrictions.

The answer is no. The people in charge get their info from CNN.

This statement is the reason kids are not learning. Parents pass this mentality to their kids and when learning is not the primary function, school becomes a social meeting. Why not stop sending your kids to school when they are old enough to stay home by themselves? They can socialize in places other than school.
And the parish is going to provided the computer/internet access to the homes that don't have it.

The reason why kids don’t learn is because there are some parents who don’t value education and therefore don’t hold their kids accountable for their school work. I’m an engineer and my wife is a doctor so we obviously value education and hard work. We sit with our kids every night to do homework and read. There’s no benefit to virtual learning in elementary schools other than appeasing teachers who don’t truly value education or hard work.

i think most in this thread can see the forest thru the trees. there's obviously some bickering back and forth about silly points. see me targeting Breesus, even tho we agree on the subject as a whole. but most here know with out a doubt, in person schooling - is the only option, to say otherwise is uniformed and likely comes with other agendas.

Did you do your beta in a place like St.Landry? Did you do it with kids from Eunice High? Opelousas High?

Yes, yes, yes

quote:

St. Landry is largely rural and extremely poor. Forget general infrastructure like network connectivity and 5G. How will you get laptops to all the kids? How will you teach them to use Zoom....or are they going to sluff it off to Moodle modules?.

Zoom, Google meet, Google classroom. You teach them like you teach anything else. Worked great in the summer. Laptop handouts will be coordinated, we were able to hand out 300 for summer school, it's not rocket science.

quote:

What about the individual homes? Will the router and modem capacity be just minimal or will there need to be more capacity. What about those areas where broadband is limited and 5G service from towers is spotty? How will the students be accountable....how will the teachers? I think I can be safe in saying that the brain trust at the school board there has not really even begun to think out the logistics.....they seldom do

CARES act allocates funding for rural internet (partnered with local ISP and education hot spot companies like Kajeet) and a device for each kid in need. We know the data, we will pull this off technically, and device wise. Believe it or not St. Landry Parish is 1:1 as of this year.

The logistics are already worked out. Sometimes you need to ask questions BEFORE talking shite about something you have no idea about, then turn around accusing people literally working IN THE SITUATION of the same.

That’s great and I wish more parents valued education and put forth effort to encourage their kids to learn the topics being taught. I just disagree that it holds zero benefit to try online learning. Nobody is advocating for virtual learning permanently. Just temporarily.
And lord knows that kids older than 4 or 5 can be seen with tablets or iPads these days So they have the ability to understand basics when it comes to tech. I think they should be in classroom for sure but I also think you’re incorrect in assuming teachers prefer virtual. I haven’t talked to any yet who wouldn’t rather be in the class. It seems in St. Landry, parents are wanting to keep their kids from in person attendance, not the teachers.

Finally, some sense in here. This is not 100% virtual school year, this is start the reopening for schools slowly in phases just like the state/country was. They were planning on throwing all kids preK-4 back 5 days a week at 100% capacity, and doing hybrid where we have 5-12 going 2 days a week. Some schools out here (Lawtell) have 800 kids and they go K-8 they would have to do both models. There was too much uncertainty. We are opting to start in phase 1, most districts are choosing phase 2. It's that simple. It will expand to face to face classes rather quickly if the virus trends go down.

As it stands hospitals are going up in the region, and the biggest hospital in the area is at 80% capacity. We are looking ahead, instead of starting traditional, then scrambling after forced to close.

This IMO is a better plan and the safest option.

So what do you do with all the children aged 5-14 with working parents? You just sit an 8 year old at home by himself in front of a computer?

Where is the accountability for the kids who don't log in? Or sell or lose their laptops?

People need to stop looking for a motive behind questions and then responding to that assumed motive.

Said guy ended his post with basically dissing school board members and staff he doesn't know.

How bout waiting till getting actual info before putting people you dont know down?

He had a motive, he insulted the intelligence of people he doesn't know to cap off his questions.
