He has been in Gonzales for a couple of years but has spent his whole priesthood before up north (dakotas maybe).
He seemed like an OK guy but with some health problems. I enjoyed his homilies but wasn’t involved at that parish. If I recall, he grew up in Baton Rouge but moved away for college and became a priest. His aging local family and a shortage of priests in Baton Rouge, were reasons for him to transfer down.
With limited ties to the area, I think someone convinced him early that the change was needed and for better or worse, he has hitched himself up to that side.
I was very pleased when my kid was in catholic school where the church and school really teamed up for a good experience. Great priest and great lay people are key to a good community. Alas there always seems to be infighting and personal politics at some point.

We were very fortunate to have father cleo when I was there after a few ...not great priests.
He reminded me of the old school priests.
He was there during a lot very rough times. And everyone was damned lucky to have him.

But is returning to the status quo 6 months ago, actually change?

12 years of Catholic school for me, followed by pulling my kids from a Catholic school after 2 years, showed that a great pastor can have a great positive impact on a school, and a bad pastor can absolutely destroy a school.

Here’s the quick rundown:
Good post.
The bottom line is, the power is with the parents of the students.
If they feel strongly enough, they can pull their kids out.
But in all likelihood, not many will.

I actually enjoyed going to mass when he was there, I wasn't a regular are anything, but there were times I went 2 weeks in a row when Cleo was there,

That priest doesnt sound very priestly.
In all honesty, priests are like cops.
2/5 may be decent human beings.
The rest suck and abuse their power.

Some upper crust Plaque-maniacs (I also believe this is in itself an oxymoron) are raising hell because they’re not getting their way.
HA! That's really not the case in this situation. Do we have some entitled parents, sure we do, just like any other school. This is simply about people being tired of the BS.
The parents are defending a new principal that is an "outsider" that they don't even know personally. So yeah, it's certainly not about parents not getting their way.

Was the new priest previously connected to the parish, maybe a former vicar?
Nope. He has no prior connections to the parish.

This is the tough part. People in Plaquemine love their school and want to be there but what do you do in this situation? You would think calling on the diocese to step in would be beneficial, but that has turned out not to be the case. Just a bad deal all around.

Sounds like a handful of administrators don’t want to grow the school nor let go of power.
Is that the gist of the story?
Mercy was like that for a while and Cleo grew it anyway.

Not sure if true but I heard the new principal was holding the teachers accountable and demanding they do their job. Must has rustled the feathers of the old regime.

100% true. The old admin was lazy and didn’t want to let go of their power! Went through more trouble to get her fired then to just work as a team to educate the youth of America. I am also hearing the Assistant Principal doesn’t want the job. Why go through all of this just to turn down the job?

But he was having a weak moment and was tired. I’m using that line from now on.

She wants the job, but has been overlooked numerous times. Look on Kiran’s first post. It had a rundown of everything.

Absolutely
But they have to then choose a new school for the kids.
Which may be a worse situation than the one they left. They would be the outsiders in the new school.
Or they can home school.

Yeah well She is a toxic Person who shouldn’t be allowed to teach kids. The former principal isn’t innocent either she been behind the scenes pushing the envelope.

Hadn't heard about that. Searched for the school name + reddit, and I wish I hadn't.
If my kid were subjected to any of that, I would go scorched earth.

She looks like an older version of Honey Boo Boo.
