ST. FRANCISVILLE, LA (WAFB) -
An attorney and former candidate for the District Attorney’s Office of the 20th Judicial District has been arrested following accusations that he molested a juvenile in 2003, according to the West Feliciana Parish Sheriff's Office.

David R. Opperman, 55, of St. Francisville, turned himself into deputies at the West Feliciana Parish Detention Center on Wednesday.

A complaint filed on November 20, 2017, accused Opperman of molesting a 13-year-old girl in October 2003. Deputies investigated the allegations and issued a warrant for Opperman’s arrest on Tuesday.

A judge set Opperman’s bond at $50,000. Deputies say the case remains under investigation.

Current East and West Feliciana Parish District Attorney Sam D'Aquilla defeated Opperman in the November 4, 2014, election.

what kind of evidence does one need to get someone arrested on these charges from 14yrs ago?

As little as a statement from the victim if it has enough detail.

This is genuinely scary, and a lot of juries are not skeptical enough when considering these charges that stem from events that took place years ago.

The girl would now be around 27 - she somehow couldn't report it until now?

I have a pending habeas corpus on a case where the step-father was accused of molesting two teen step daughters.

A divorce was pending. Mother tells husband/stepfather "Give me the truck or I'll have criminal charges filed against you." He doesn't give her the truck, she files charges. Before a metting where the girls' statements were going to be taken by authorities, the mother met with them to "get their stories straight." At trial, the testimony of the girls contradicted their statements. The statement of one contradicted the statement of the other. The trial testimony of one contradicted that of the other. The result: conviction. The sentences: 25 years one one, life on the other.

A misdemeanor with this many evidentiary flaws would be laughed out of court. But, in a perverse reversal of justice, when someone can go to jail for life over a child sex charge, the courts seem to forgive these evidentiary flaws because it involves children.

TIME has fricked over all men. Yeah, those who have truly molested or raped should be punished. But no doubt thousands of innocent people are about to be accused because it’s the “now” topic.

In 3 years, every man will be accused of something sexual in nature..

Seriously, anyone who sexually harrasses people, molest juveniles, etc should be properly punished, but when all of this stuff comes out at once.. If there are situations that do go to court. Are juries affected by hearing all of these stories coming out? A lot could have happened, 15-20.. 30 years ago that doesn't get included in the story, that might have played a factor then..

On the other hand, with all of these stories, maybe there are people who are saying "you know what? It happened to me and the person who did it has been able to live a normal, successful life while it has scarred me. I should have said something then, but I was scared, I didn't know what to do but I can say it now".

I think women all over are taking this #MeToo thing and pushing it to its limits. Are there women who have been sexually assaulted in the past? YES, of course, and frick those dudes who did that to them but I guarantee you there are ones taking advantage of this social fad and using it for their own benefit as well.

Unfortunately, now everything from forcible rape to brushing up against some girls tit at the bar is considered sexual assault.

Don’t judge me. I’m playing battlefront and drinking Sauza 901 since I have a week in between new jobs. The fact I’m posting somewhat coherent sentences is a miracle on par with Jesus birth and skittles.

Happened to two people I knew 20 years ago, in both cases there was money involved, neither went to prison, but it destroyed their careers and lives, one of them later committed suicide.

What is the statute of limitations? She hit 18 5 years later, then waited another 9 years to tell?

Beyond the fact that children were involved here there are many adults coming forward, years later, when there is no way to tell if they even ever saw the accused. Acquisitions are not enough. We are a land of laws, not witch hunts.

In 1981, I had 5 beers and my girlfriend had 1. She then took advantage of me. Where do I sign up for my victim card, crowd funding, and giant box from Whitman's Sampler? I will be pitied.

That scenario is horrifying. It’s horrifying to me as a man and a father of a son. My advice to friends is never get mixed up with a woman who has kids. Which is unfortunate on several levels.

And this keeps happening. Juries won’t do their damn simple job. DAs won’t do their job. Judges don’t care. frick all of them. They all deserve death, frankly. You willfully condemn a man to slow death in prison when you know or should know he’s innocent? That’s judicial murder.

I defended an Agg Rape case like this. Thankfully I won the trial, but I never could understand why the DA even wanted my client to go to prison. The stories were bogus. One of the methhead accusers (accusations were 25 years old) was even in prison in Mississippi at the time of the trial. That sort of case should never even be accepted by a DA. They have power but are expected to wield that power with discretion.

For sex crimes in Louisiana, statute of limitations is pretty much non applicable. Louisiana will happily put a man in prison based solely on a single accusation. You could have a 80 yr old accuse a man of something that happened in 1940, and these tard jurors and evil DAs won’t mind a bit.

It's the same in South Carolina. There is a presumption of guilt in every child sex case and judges, solicitors and jurors bend over backwards to get a conviction. Sex offenders are scum, but the highest rate of wrongful convictions are child sex cases.
