Squirrel problem - need help

Squirrels have been digging into the top of my columns and nesting. I tried half heartedly to put some grating up there but they just dug around it.
Advice? Poison? Better grating? As you’ll see, it seems they also dug into the side of the column to get to the nest.

Use a Havahart trap. I caught a bunch in my backyard using ritz and peanut butter.

Go to Amazon.
Buy a single “squirrelinator” trap.
Sprinkle nuts and orange slices inside the trap and around the entrance (there are two of them).
It takes a few days for the squirrels to get accustomed to the trap but then you will catch them like crazy.
Once you catch one, just drop it in the water and drown it and throw away the carcass. Don’t try to relocate them - they find their way back.

Or just blast them with a pellet gun.
OP just don’t get a trap that’s big enough to catch bigger pests. Nothing worse than trying to figure out how to get a fricking raccoon out of those standard animal traps.

I don’t like doing it either but the squirrels started the war against me. I lived peacefully with them (I enjoy watching them) for decades and then they started chewing into my attic.
I set the trap where I get the ones on my roof only. Stay off my house - I have no problem.

If you don't have a cat, get a sonic repeller. They emit a 140 decibel noise at 45000 hz.
People and dogs can't hear it. Squirrels can.
Another trick: Mix Vaseline and crab boil and rub it around their spot.
Or leave rags soaked in apple cider vinegar near their spot.

We had the closed off due to pigeons, upright Hardie or whatever and paint. Good luck.

Bird shot and some drywall mud or wood putty depending on the squirrel placement when you shoot it

Buy up a bird feed.. And they will come to it.. Get a pellet gun and it will be like shooting fish in a barrel.

Go to Lowes and get Pest be gone, smells really bad, they HATE it. you will have to spray a lot of it for multi days, but it will work.

Also, once heat comes they will leave until next winter.

Had a similar problem but babies were in the crawl space and I couldn’t catch them all. I simply made the environment really uncomfortable for a few days and they all moved out. Once out, I filled the opening with the rodent preventative spray foam and fixed the damage. Never came back.
Making the environment uncomfortable was simple:
I sprayed rodent eliminator spray everywhere I could reach and ran an extension cord in to the opening to power a lamp and two of those irritating rodent noise makers. Cost me about $15 total.
