SPLC wants the momuments in their control

quote:

As your office stated, 'The future of the former monuments belongs in the hands of those who care about them.' We count ourselves among the people who care about them, and we are not alone," wrote Heidi Beirich, the director of the SPLC's Intelligence Project, which publishes a magazine that identifies white nationalist groups.

quote:

The letter continues: "People whose families continue to feel the legacy of slavery and white supremacy are more entitled than anyone else when it comes to deciding the fate of these monuments. We hope that something novel can be done to ensure they will serve as distinct and meaningful tools to educate future generations about slavery, the Civil War and the lasting legacy of Jim Crow."

The Mayor's response:
quote:

Cantrell's spokesman, Beau Tidwell, issued a statement Monday acknowledging the letter. "Mayor Cantrell is in receipt of the letter, and appreciates the interest and the input from the Southern Poverty Law Center," Tidwell said. "As she has said repeatedly -- the Mayor is open to input from all sides, and she will take their concerns under advisement as she considers next steps."

Relocation committee response:
quote:

RIchard Marksbury, spokesman for the Monument Relocation Committee issued a statement in response to the SPLC letter. "Why should anyone care about the opinion of the Southern Poverty Law Center regarding an issue which pertains to the citizens of New Orleans, who, by the way, have never been given the opportunity to vote their preference regarding the monuments?" Marksbury said. "Since New Orleans is approximately 65 percent African-American, I would think the SPLC would champion an effort to put the issue to the voting residents of Orleans Parish."

This will get all the jimmies rustled in NOLA. The insanity that will ensue if they were to actually get a major say in this decision would be explosive, possibly literally. As a Historian, I understand both sides of the argument but they need to be placed in museum/civil war grave site. Mississippi has a few good sites I could list.

What say you OT?

I think they should repurpose those materials to fill potholes. Pretty much everyone living in this city would rather have fixed streets instead of statues.

If you don’t live in the city your opinion doesn’t matter.

I’m sure some of these idiots would see that as sticking it to the man, driving over their statues.

That isn’t how this works.

Why not just send them to Beauvoir in Biloxi and let them be displayed at a historical site in a display with historical context? Its a compromise to both sides...pro-statue side gets the statues preserved and still can be displayed. Anti-statue side doesn't have to be triggered walking past them since you'd have to visit Jefferson Davis' house to actually see them.

The dispositions of the entitled miscreants of certain areas of New Orleans are quite weak, Mr. Scruffy. If you hail from Louisiana you know what I speak of. This is history plain and simple. It can be repeated if not taught in context. Its obvious slavery will not come back and it should not. This goes without saying but SPLC etc. folks want their cake and to eat it as the old saying goes.

I hate to say this but the gubberment needs to relocate the statues to a museum, case closed. They are asking for more trouble.

EDIT: Beauvoir in Biloxi is a great idea.

You thought Landrieu was bad. Wait until the real loonies get their say and start tearing down Bienville, Iberville, Andrew Jackson, Joan of Arc, and every fleur de lis across the city.

Its coming.

Eta- its not even about the confederates any more either. Now any monuments referring to Louisiana's white European history will be referred to as supporting a white supremicist movement.

With the Confederate Memorial Hall Museum being in New Orleans. Why would it be difficult for them to do something with them there?

Because it’s probably not too far down the list for removal.

Sure put it up around the corner from where they took it down.

I don't think the Confederate Museum should be shut down. That would be pretty stupid.

Also, the idea of moving them to another state seems like a fishy idea. I highly doubt MS,TN,AL or GA want that kind of public spotlight.

Someone was bothered enough to go through trouble of taking them down.
