Be prepared to switch companies. Maybe not with the occupational safety degree. Once the plant has invested enough training into you, they won't move you out of operations unless it's a temp-assignment day job. Some of our operators have engineering degrees and they have 0 shot at getting an engineering gig at the plant.

@42/hr with built in 1.5 pay and holiday pay, you don't really have to work much overtime to make six figures. It usually takes 4 years to max out on certifications and pay. I'd be shocked if any maxed out operators, no matter the age, are not making six figures easily.

Pair that with about 500 hrs of overtime and total compensation with bonus is around 120-130k

He said it himself, his last four hours if each shift is 1.5 times pay....that's the overtime part. Meaning he's working 1.5 jobs to make six figs. Also said he has a shitty work schedule...the only way most plant baws make six figs is by working a lot of shitty hours.

Wish I would have went to La Tech for the aviation program. Settled for staying for a girl. So stupid.
Eventually got my MBA but not working in my dream career field.

Whatever degree would allow you to open a yard and garden center.
Folks buy $1,000 - $2,000 worth of shrubs from you and $500 worth of Crepe Myrtles and then they all die, the next year, they buy another $3,000 worth and so on.
Hire a bunch of happy Hondurans from the groups crossing Mexico today to cut lawns, weed-eat and pull weeds from shopping center flower beds and upscale house landscapes. Bribe councilman and get contract from city to plant salvia plants in springtime and pansies in the fall in Stop Light flower beds.
Get a panel truck or two and zero turn lawnmower trailers for workers, Get an F150 or Dodge Ram diesel for you and buy some LL Bean Gardener jeans to look the part.
Learn how yo put in sprinkler systems in yards. They are always in need of repair and the homeowner has made the initial investment so they must keep it going.
Great life plan advice, freely offered. Wish I had done it 50 years back. I could be living on the North Shore in Hawaii now watching the surf break.

My base schedule puts me at 183 work shifts a year. I make $42 an hour on days and $43.50 on nights.
On nights I make $348 for the first 8hrs and $261 for the last 4. Comes out to $609 for 12 hrs
On days for the first 8hrs I make $336 and $252 for the last 4. Comes out ot $598 for 12 hrs
So, 91 days at $598 and 91 days at $609.
Comes out to almost $110,000. Without bonus or working an overtime shift.

I got hired on with a small chem plant as an operator in my last semester at 20 years old.
A year later got hired on with a major. Been with the major since and I’m now at top pay. $42 an hour, $43.50 on nights. 1.5x pay for the last 4 hours of every shift. Quarterly safety bonus and an 8-10% yearly bonus
But it’s honest not even worth it. People have no idea how hard swapping your sleep schedule from nights to days every 2 days is.
And when your off you spend most of your time resting to make up for the sleep you lost in transition.
I think it depends on work-life balance.
90K is 15K more than what I make. But unlike you, my hours are capped at 40. I also have a flexible schedule.
I'm considering going to school part time to complete the program.

Considering I retired at age 43 , drawing a nice retirement check and married to a beauty who i 14 years younger than myself. I am going to have to go with NONE. My Masters in History that I didn't use at all in my chosen career worked out pretty nicely for me.

Shitty hours yes. 1.5 jobs, not even close. My base schedule is 5-12hour (60hrs) shifts one week, 2-12 (24hrs) hour shifts the next.
So, 84hrs every 2 week pay period.
I picked up 500hrs of (not built in OT) so extra 41 shifts this year so basically picked up 41 at 1.5x pay for the full twelve hour shift
Total this year I’m averaging 51hrs/week

I graduated LSU with a Mechanical Engineering degree a while back. Did that for a few years and fell in love with the design part of the job. Went to a tech school for design drafting and I’ve been a Pipe Designer for 15 years making more than engineers. Yes, the market has its ups and downs but the ups are extremely lucrative.

The average is a misleading statistic when you are working 70-something hours half the weeks and 20-something the other half.

I’m in the same boat as you. I’ve got a 4 year degree in Exercise Science (wanted to do Physical therapy school but couldn’t get in with a 3.4). Got a Ptec degree, because I was ready to go to work and tired of school. But I absolutely hate shift work. At a crossroads right now where I’m wondering if this is what I want to do all my life. Would love to coach football, played in college, but the money isn’t there.
