Mostly self-sufficient, confident, responsible, and while considerate, doesn't let others' feelings or opinions be the main guide of his actions. Doesn't wear his feelings on his sleeves or gossip, but is not afraid to show emotion when called for.

What's makes a man?
Is it the woman in his arms?
Just cause she has big titties?

Or is it the way he fights everyday?
No, it's probably the titties.

Now you're a man!

You have said (I think...please correct me if I misinterpreted you) that gender roles in the animal kingdom and primitive human societies have nothing to do with modern gender relations.

What are the (non-anatomic) differences between human males and females, in your opinion? Are there any?

yes i was getting there too....if sexual dimorphism only extended to egg and sperm, there would be no reason for the the other physical differences. There must have been an adaptive advantage to have one stronger than the other etc. It stands to reason the brain would also work differently to some extent.

Do you mean essential differences or socially constructed differences?

"Rational aggression" and "confidence" are pretty capacious too.

Frankly, I don't know many spineless people. Do you?

I don't think there any essential differences between women and men.

Now, I do think that individuals have certain natural tendencies (so someone can be cowardly or courageous by nature, for instance). And I do think that these natural tendencies can in turn be generally clumped together among various categories, including gender.

The problem here is simple: how do you tell the difference between what is natural and what is inculcated? We know when we choose to do this or that, that these choices are products of our "will" (or what we experience as our will). However, we feel as though many things which are actually products of custom are "second nature" (i.e., not natural in fact but in appearance / experience).

Finally, the early evolutionary history of human beings is very dubiously connected to contemporary human nature. First, we really don't know much about early primitive human culture (was it patriarchal? matriarchal?). We don't know really whether we extend observations say, to tribes in the Amazonian jungle, to all human beings. It also need to be pointed out that the "hardware" of the human mind around stopped evolving ca. 100000 years ago; but what we really care about here is the software.

Contrary to the OTs opinion. The alpha male protects his pack.

It's also worth pointing out that the male fear of being emasculated by women usurping the place of men is very ancient. E.g., the myth of the Amazons.
