950 ? I've always heard they end up costing several thousand. I guess it depends on who you know

close calls

Had a couple. When I was in Tallahassee I was coming home from the bars late one night and ran through a speed trap. They had a dozen cars pulled over in this little park off the side of the road. I was speeding and most likely over the limit. They pulled me into the park and wrote me a ticket for speeding but never made me do a FST or anything. Was happy to pay that ticket.

Another time in Palisade, CO after a wine festival. We were driving back to our hotel and saw a checkpoint way up the road so I turned off and drove through a bunch of neighborhoods to get to where we were going.

I've had 2.

The first time, I wasn't drunk. As in, I didn't drink that night. Guy said I refused to take the breathalyzer. Wish I had had money at that time, but I'm sure they wouldn't have pulled something like that if I wasn't obviously a broke college student with no resources.

The second time, I miscalculated. Needed to wait another hour. Was stone cold sober, but didn't give it enough time for me to be under the legal limit. I definitely earned that DUI, but that state trooper made my passed-out drunk friend drive my car to the hotel. I had stopped drinking 3 hours earlier, but he kept drinking like a fish for those 3 hours. They clearly weren't concerned about public safety. I was sure they were going to just wait a few minutes and then pull him over.

I passed a slough of field sobriety tests, bombed a breathalyzer, and then had the results confirmed via a blood tests.

The cops let me go because they were impressed.

And I was just sitting on a bike when it happened.

The Air Force set up a CP on base and I had consumed a couple of brews before coming thru the gate. McChord Field for you AF baws.

I made it through the CP, but I was so nervous that I stopped at the Class 6 for a tall boy.

Came close once. A state trooper set one up on a back road I ended up going through. I had left a friend's house that I was drinking at, then stopped at Taco Bell. He said something about my Taco Bell, then I started griping about how they messed my order up and he sent me on my way.

I have a client who is 90 years young. His wife was killed when a drunk driver hit her head on while she was driving home only 1 mile from her home. That was 50 years ago and he has and still volunteers helping recovering alcoholics and is a local advocate against drunk driving.

Before you get behind the wheel, think about how much you could do to someone else and yourself if you drink and drive and have an accident.

Pay for a cab or use Uber/Lyft or many cities have volunteers who will pick you up and drive you home.

A Lt. Col. I served under kept a bottle of scotch in her desk and would have a few shots a day.

I thought I was done once. Went through a checkpoint after a beer festival. Wearing beer gear and had empty legs in back seat. Cop asked if I'd been drinking, I said no and he said have a good night. I would've failed.

I got a speeding ticket after an afternoon of beer drinking; the cop could tell and wanted to test me. I failed the roadside test so he took me to the station for a breathalyzer test. I blew a 0.05. The cop said "Congratulations, you're only half drunk" and took me back to my jeep.

This was '97-98, when the limits were higher and cops were a little cooler...today that would not go as well.
