We need the river spilling out at the right spots (read: not at the current mouth but just south of NOLA and south of Morgan City via the Atch.)

I truly believe within the next 30 years we will see a catastrophic failure somewhere along the levee. Damage and impact will depend on where it occurs. Infrastructure is not cheap to maintain and many studies show humans don't plan correctly for that maintenance.

Why is California commenting on the spillway being opened?

quote:Nor am I.... I just watch the documentaries. They claim that the Ms river is levied almost all the way to the mouth, so nearly all the silt and dirt deposits flow out into the Gulf of Mexico. The spillway releases some of these silt and dirt deposits into the marshy areas below NOLA and west of the river, thus rebuilding them... or so they claim.
But I’m not as educated on the pros and cons as you may be.

Isn’t that what the river is already doing with it closed?
No, the dredging counters that. People think the river is doing what it's supposed to b/c we have to dredge, but all the dredging is for is to deepen the river. It is the opposite of what the miss r. wants to do. Naturally, it should be shallow and wide with a slower flow. Deep dredging sends deposits further out into the gulf and they don't have time to be brought back into the coast by currents. The deposits that we put on land are just a band-aid to the problem. Sooner or later we will lose this battle, just a matter of time.
At least that is the way I understand it. Someone could correct me if not.
ETA: Here is a Wunderground article dealing with the river.

It should meander based on deposits within the river. This is how S La was formed. Levees keep it from meandering (read: we can have modern day marine-based industry) and thus the sand finds itself in the bottom of the nav channel. So it’s gets dredged and disposed of somewhere

Coastal fisherman for reds and specks in the marshes have a different viewpoint.

The atchafalya delta is rebuilding new land at a very lightening fast pace by itself with the dredging at the mouth to keep a 16’ depth for vessels that are able to get by with their draft.
The mouth of the Miss dredging is is not only keeping the channel deep enough for the ships but they are also building new islands and new land down there. It’s quite impressive
Google “John Snell Mississippi River Dredging” and he’s done some pretty extensive research on this the past few years.

I had read an article a few months back about that one building up and was going to link it too but couldn’t find it. Was it because of some channel they dug? I can’t exactly remember.

Mudslides, wildfires, earthquakes, floods, droughts, etc. Cali has it all and much of it is self inflicted.

I can't stand a self-inflicted drought, earthquake and flood.

River is at flood stage & as much as 10” of rain predicted this weekend. Corp began opening today. The levees should hold unless some dumbass tug captain cannot handle the increased current & run 10 barges into them.

Mississippi River is now up to 17.25 ft
2017 Mississippi River flood when Morganza had to be opened 2 years ago same place.
