Does anyone know a grad student or upper level speech student that would possibly be interested in working with my 18 month old son? He is borderline so insurance won’t cover a true therapist appointment. Just trying to get him headed in the right direction. Thanks in advance.

Around the ragged rock, the rugged rascal ran.

Good luck.

Is that not a little early for speech therapy? Just asking, I have no clue.

LSU Speech and Hearing Clinic is full of grad students who take on clients under the supervision of a licensed pathologist.

Bring him to the LSU Speech and Hearing Clinic.

They will see him for low or no cost.

He is on waiting list at LSU, hoping for the fall. He is a little young and borderline in need so we aren’t in a huge bind, just looking to get him started in the right direction.

Curious, how do you determine an 18 mo has a speech disorder? Serious question.

Abilities may have a therapist on maternity leave or part time. You could call them and ask.

Also, don’t let insurance dictate what your kid can and can’t receive. Go get a second opinion if possible.

His pediatrician referred him for an evaluation. The therapist there did some communication type games to gage comprehension and verbalization. He is fine on comprehension just what they consider borderline on the verbalizing. We think he is just kinda stubborn but would like to get him the assistance if truly needed.

Comprehension shouldn’t hold him back from speech. My son could comprehend, follow tasks and do basic things and some advanced things when evaluated. But he couldn’t say much except momma, oh geez, wow, yea and no.

2 years later he’s now using sentences. So definitely don’t stop with trying to get assistance with your insurance.

I also think Abilities has a discount depending on income.

Wait 18 months? Let the kid grow up and then reevaluate

Not a good plan, although an innocent thought, it could constitute practicing without a license, recommend getting on the list at LSU and at that point the students are practicing under supervision of a licensed professional

Pediatric Therapy & Learning Center in Lafayette is by far the best. Worth the drive if you can swing it

One of my nephews didn't talk at all until he was four years old, then he suddenly started speaking in complete sentences. Now he's a high school sophomore, plays baseball and football, and makes neary straight A's.

See if you can get an early steps evaluation. And a second opinion. If you need any off-board help let me know.

The good news is that boys don’t start talking as quickly as girls, and it can also be a sign of genius.

Why did your ped refer you to a specialist in the first place? Because of your own concerns based on stuff you read online?

Is mommy pushing this?
