Most churches are nothing more than social-clubs. They are run by humans and therefore are highly fallible and prone to corruption.
Jesus didn't start any religions. He brought a revolutionary way of living and thinking.
You don't need a church to love your God and love your neighbor.
I will attend various churches from time to time because I like to worship through music and enjoy a good sermon every now and then, but I don't think I'll ever become a member of a church again.

You were not made to just live life and 'do you', but instead to serve others.
Not trying to single you out, just replied to the top post.

Damn baws this thread struck a serious cord. Over 250 posts. Bottom line is I don't really care if people want to speak in tongues, gibberish, run up and down the aisle or worship a friggin set of bulls nuts. You do you boo. Its almost football season so my Sundays will be spent in the dome.

I remember the Pentecostal preacher growing up. Whipped the shite out of his congregation - people speaking in tongue, flopping. He drove a caddy and lived in monster house with a golf club membership. Dude soaked a blue color crowd for big big $$$'s. Many years later he had to resign when it came out he had fricked about half the married ladies in the choir over the years.
Good times.
Good times.

Fake as shite. It is done by narcissistic assholes who want people to believe they have a deeper relationship with God that even they don't understand but they are somehow an instrument of Gods. They are usually low IQ. I th ink it is hilarious.

I grew up in that church. 9 hours a week for 15 years.

Charismatic evangelicalism is not everybody's thing. I think those mega-churches do a lot of good work and they have a lot of good people, but it's a little exuberant and a little anti-intellectual for my tastes.
But she obviously wants a change, so why don't you church shop? If she's bored with Catholicism but you're not comfortable with Bethany, then just insist on a middle ground.

Going to hell can be a powerful deterrent from switching.

I wonder how successful I'd be if I opened up a new church where no "hell" exists.
That's called mainline Protestantism.

I probably could be the richest sumbitch in my parish.
Judging by the rapidly shrinking membership rolls of mainline churches, probably not.

Wait....do Catholics really believe that non-Catholic Christians(that believe that Jesus is their Lord and Savior, still believe in the trinity and death and resurrection) are going to hell just because they are not Catholic?? Seriously?

Yes we do.
Non-Catholics are certainly going to Hell.

Nurse - absolutely. This is also standard belief in church of Christ and similar denominations. Everyone thinks they have a line on the truth and all others bound for the fires of hell.

The Catholic Church doesn't believe that anymore. It used to but that belief was discarded by the Second Vatican Council. The official line is that Catholicism is the one true faith but that those who seek God by other means and haven't had the truth "properly" revealed to them get a pass.

Masses are a joke, but also not defending Bethany. Every mass I've been to is like watching a rerun of an old TV show. Tongues is a real thing, but the sad thing is 99% of the time people fake it. I don't speak in Tongues or whatever, I just know the Bible does talk about Tongues a great deal.

Never said I was 'doing me'. See the part where I said 'love your neighbor'.
I understand the human need for being in a group that shares a like mind, but we are citizens of the world and are made to love everyone, to help everyone and to judge no one.
Also, on the claim that Catholicism is the 'one true faith'... Really? You think Jesus would walk around the Vatican and think, "The money they've spent on architecture and art has been put to fine use."?

They only believed that for about 1,932 years, but not anymore.

Anyway we go to church, and its this huge place packed with people and right away I knew this was one of those tele-evangelists and sure enough when it came time to pass the collection plates the minister went on a rant that the more you give the more you recieve and that they needed the money to build an even bigger church.
Gotta love prosperity gospel. Don't even need a financial advisor - put 10% in the plate, get back 12%. Good deal.

Wow. Glad my church doesn't spew nonsense like this. I always thought as long as you believe in the basic beliefs that ALL Christian denominations share(I'm talking REAL Christian denominations and not ones that try to fool others that they are such as Mormons) that you go to Heaven.
Ours follows straight from the Bible on that one on who goes to Heaven....belief that Jesus was the son of God and that his death on the cross and resurrection was for all of humanity's sins. No works you do can "earn" your place in Heaven.
