I have seen comments about the size of this thing. Does anyone have a quick image of it vs. Saturn 5?

That’s why they’ve progressed so quickly.

That is the big point. What just launched was already out-dated. They really did not care what happened after clearing tower, max-q was icing on cake. If seperation occurred, it would be an actual unicorn.

So did they blow it up intentionally because seperation wasn't working, or did it blow up on it's own?

Yes... the Flight Termination System (FTS) caused the explosion... it self-destructed once it started flipping

Also, did the 5 out engines cause a problem with failure to seperate?

If it was a problem with separation... the 5 out Raptors shouldn't have been an issue

Still, clearing the tower and going 4+ minutes was great to see. Smoke some reefer today and get back in the lab tomorrow.

Massive success for SpaceX

You are correct. I live in Houston and I've been to JSC countless times and the Saturn is just ridiculous in size.

I'm behind in learning about this monster. Why in the world would they want to flip prior to separation?

I think Elon said after Monday's scrub that they needed to get this booster & Starship off the pad so the next, updated, set can get on the pad for testing

It's a really complicated design to get right. Even with just the Starship suborbital launches they didn't have a perfect one. And the plan is to eventually catch the giant booster with forks on the launch tower....

It'll be great for humanity if it works but I'll believe it when I see the whole system test successfully.

They don't

That was not supposed to look like that today. It's supposed to happen on the reentry of starship to help slow it down.

Spacex advances through flight testing and failure. There's many videos of the Falcon 9 development and the RUD's experienced on the way. That thing reminded me of a C5 taking off, it is the scale of the beast.

I think the Shuttle program was one of the only that just loaded up and lit the wick. No test flights with the shuttle if I recall.

No test launches, but 2 un-manned and then 2 manned test landings.

Which was obviously more about testing the airplane part than the rocket part.

Is that an automated process or does someone have a kill switch?

I'd love to hear from the person on the trigger if it's a kill switch. Would be awesome to hear what goes through their mind there.

Everything should be automated

Surprised the FTS didn't activate quicker actually

That might be the biggest concern.

Idk what the failure mode for non-seperation is supposed to be, but I doubt the booster is supposed to try to do it's return maneuver with the 2nd stage still attached.

Correct. the orbiter testing was one thing. But the launching all of it along with a crew was go for broke.

I'm sure they have to assess the pad & tank farm for damage from this launch... but booster 9 & Starship 26 should already be built and ready to go
