To get into orbit around mars they’d have to do a deceleration burn which means hauling all that fuel up there. They are just getting it passed the orbit of mars to say it’s out that far (and prove they can) but it’s not actually going into orbit around it.

Yeah I didn’t mean actual orbit but it was supposed to turn right at the mars orbit to come back around. I would think playing kerbal enough that I would have the verbiage down.

Damn impressive. Knowing virtually nothing of this test prior to today, I guess I was most surprised by, of all things, just how quickly those boosters got back. That was ~150km round-trip out of the frickin atmosphere and back in like eight minutes.

The on board cams of the boosters coming back down do not give it justice on how fricking fast those things were falling back to earth.

I wish that I had that kind of brain power.

Elon Musk is pushing civilization forward.

Though the Falcon Heavy’s outer cores successfully landed after launch this afternoon, the middle core of SpaceX’s huge rocket missed the drone ship where it was supposed to land, a source tells The Verge. SpaceX later confirmed The Verge’s reporting in a press conference.

quote:

The center core was only able to relight one of the three engines necessary to land, and so it hit the water at 300 miles per hour about 300 feet from the drone ship. As a result, two engines on the drone ship were taken out when it crashed, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said in a press call after the rocket launch. “[It] was enough to take out two thrusters and shower the deck with shrapnel,” he said

He also said they'd release the videos of that event if the cameras weren't destroyed for "the blooper reel" haha.

After a bunch of tries I found a vid with pretty decent sound of the liftoff. Sounds like it’s ripping the sky a new one.

eta: Rewind to start, not sure why it starts in the middle. Maybe just my browser.

Youtube

Bonus landing .gif. That shite is unreal.

It's so funny to think of that Tesla sitting in there.

I am seriously trying to not let this taint the memories of past space launches that now seem mundane in comparison.

Oh, please sweet baby Jesus, make sure the cameras are intact because I need more close up footage of a 135 foot tall core with one engine lit spewing fire slamming into the water fire first at 300 mph in my life.

100s of engineers and millions of man hours went into this. Don't let Musk fool you.
