Anyone else remember hearing this shite 20 years ago in elementary school? I know it's possible, but unrealistic and costly for the masses.

What are some other technologies we were supposed to have by now?

I was a Soph in HS when we watched a space shuttle explode live on TV. I really don't remember too many people saying much about a short flight from DFW to Sidney via space.

I remember that damn science magazine with this where some plane bounces off the upper layers of the atmosphere.

DoD/Lockheed tested a Scramjet a few years ago. It launched from the ground in Southern California, less than twenty minutes later they hit the self destruct button... it was over halfway to Hawaii.

At those speeds getting the power to propel an aircraft isn’t the biggest issue - it heat and flight control. One minor little bit of unaccounted for turbulence and the aircraft will tear itself apart. And at those speeds the leading edge of the aircraft reaches thousands of degrees. IIRC those surfaces were the latest form of Carbon-Carbon.

That’s why this jet was supposed to be mostly above the atmosphere. To void friction.

Things we should have by now...

Couch potato pill (pop a pill, 1% body fat And killer abs)

Cheap flight (even a tiny new jet still cost over $1 million)

Self driving cars for the masses (still only available for the rich)

Way way way cheaper solar panels

Toilets that clean you arse after shitting (I heard they have them in Asia or something, WTF, why are they not standard in homes now)

Maybe just a wish list item ....

Pizza hydration (just cause I'd love to see that back to the future stuff and all)

I'm still waiting for Timothy Olyphant's prediction of us all driving around in shape ships (from Gone in 60 Seconds)...
