Everything about that company is worse than it was 10 years ago and that’s coming from someone who had companion status with them for a decade and used to defend them.
Now they’re priced like Delta while running their business like Frontier or Spirit.
Are you me? I couldn't have said this better myself. I had companion pass for 5 straight years 2013 - 2018. I flew from Houston to Dallas and El Paso 35+ times per year and it made so much sense at the time.
Now, I won't even consider Southwest unless they are $100 cheaper than United.

United gold member. Boarding group 1, free checked bags, priority seating, and unlimited United Club access.
I only flew Southwest once and thought it was trash esp their open seating deal.

It will be interesting to see how much they charge for checked bags or what the fee structure will look like. If it's similar to Spirt with a $35 1st checked bag fee, it won't do them any favors. They could just make it a one free checked bag policy as a conpromise to their loyal customers.
However, seems like the new management will just go along with what their competitors do so they can demonstrate a "steady" revenue source to their investors. Apparently a lot of the management that was pushing back against the activist investors (the ones that want checked bags policy gone) were let go as part of the recent SW corporate layoffs.

Saved a lot with 5 people over the years. Now they offer nothing.
Yea by far the best airline to fly with kids. The death of open seating and free checked bags is a bummer for us. Checking luggage and walking to find an empty row in the back of the A group was so easy with 3 kids.

So let me get this right, Southwest goes from 5 years ago being:
- the cost effective option
- the easiest change policy
- free baggage
to:
- just as expensive as nicer airlines with better tech
- limited non-stops flights
- baggage and change policies no better than other airlines
good luck to them

Another sign that corporatism is taking over every element of our society.

quote:I once saw what seemed to be an african american female sorority retreat (all wearing jackets with the greek letters) and I shite you not, all 30+ women tried to pre board. One would get in a wheel chair and another would push them. This worked for the first 25 or so until the gate agent had enough and made SW employees push the others onto the plane. The 30+ is not an exaggeration. I was A7 and I was probably the 45th person to board the plane. Not a single one of them used a wheelchair to deboard the plane. It was like a comedy sketch.
Family boarding and pre-boarding are not the same on SW. Pre-barding boards before A1. Family boarding is after the A group but before B1.
That was the last time I flew SW, and I only flew SW because they were the only direct to Orlando (work conference) out of MSY.

That was legit the only reason A LOT of people flew them. This really sucks for LA people because Southwest was the only airline with direct flight options out of MSY (with the exception of the major airline hub directs)

Still bummed about Virgin Airlines

You do not get unlimited United Club access with gold membership.

Don’t check your bag and you can avoid the fee. Southwest will still easily be the cheapest option even if you have to pay a nominal fee to check a bag.

30+ pre boarders is a gross exaggeration
Sunday flight on SWA- 35 pre boarders, an entire boarding group basically. Not a gross exaggeration by any means. All wheelchair fatties and able body families with 7-10yo kids who were simply scamming the system. I slammed them on the post-flight survey which accomplished nothing but made me feel good.

Family boarding is not the same as pre boarding. Families used to board before the A group like preboarders, but Southwest changed that years ago. Families board between A and B now.

I suspect they just have bad leadership right now.
Southwest is in desperate need of leadership. Ending the open seat policy is a step in the right direction. With higher fees comes higher expectations from their customers. Southwest is no longer considered an 'economy' airline.
If only Breeze would get their stuff together and offer more frequent flights and destinations, they will be very successful.

Got bumped up based on qualifying flights

It’s amazing how private equity can screw things up and kill a business. Time after time. On a side note - we need more employee-owned businesses in this country…

Nope. I've been 1K for over 10 years and know United's tier system better than their own employees. The only thing gold gets you in terms of United Club is entry on international flights. Not domestic. Even 1K doesn't get it for free.
