Funny you say that being that LSU took it and learned it from Southern.

Last month, we spoke to Haymer involving allegations of kickbacks outside the Band Hall.
"I'm an honest person," Haymer said. "I have integrity. Southern pays me well enough, and there's no need for me to get kickbacks."

"Yes, the 10 percent needs to be made payable to me so that the staff can be properly compensated," a text message quoted in the lawsuit from Haymer's phone reads. "I am asking for you to hide this 10 percent in your percentage charge from your business. If this can't be done, please let me know."
How does one not see that using the word "hide" in a text message about this could go south?

What he did is Felony Theft plain as day. He should be charged, convicted and sent to jail. But over at SU, the students are rallying in his defense.
Coaches make money on the side ALL the time...why cant a band director charge for his services?
Why should he be obligated to go to parades without being paid over and above his yearly salary.
Good for him

Because he is using the band to make the money
Would you have been cool with les miles charging high schools money for players to go visit their kids and him just pocketing all the money?

No. They don't get to schedule extra games and keep the money.

Because it's not his fricking band.

Because it's structured into his compensation, dumbass. I'm going to assume you're unemployed, because you don't get to charge extra personal amounts for providing the services of your employer. Do you think the deli manager at Publix can deny you access to the deli unless you slip him a $20? Do you think a car salesman can say "Congratulations on the new car. Now, just make a check out to me personally for $500 and I'll give you the keys"

Good for him
Not really. He's pimping out an arm of publicly funded university for personal gain, which is FAR worse than the two scenarios above. You'd have to be pretty damn stupid to think this is okay.

Kinda sounds like football and baseball camps.

That's exactly what he and all other coaches do at football camps...and they have their players help out

How can you say this? You dont have a fricking clue. You cant be dumb enough to think he has to show up at every single parade that SU decides the band will play in.
Yes, I know what hes doing was wrong, per se
I'm talking about his personal time. And being paid extra for extra work outside of the scope of his duties.
Bo telling where this will go, but I am willing to bet someone along the way allowed him to do this in some fashion.

So the Mardis Gras parades were on their campus?

No, but I think the salesman is reimbursed an additional amount of the dealer owner decides hes gonna stick a bunch of cars around New Orleans in parades and needs someone to watch over them, drive them, and handle everything for him.
You don't seem to grasp that these are not a normal part of the scope of his work. Holiday optional parades are just that.

If it's against his contract directly, I don't think it's ok
I personally dont know what was in it for SU...neither do you. Do they usually get paid if their band matches in some obscure parade? Do they control that schedule? I'd do, what is the director obligated yo do? I think we all know it's not UNLIMITED for NON school events.
So, let's say I want the band to play at Contraband days parade in LC, and it's a holiday. What are the protocols for SU to be able to demand the band show up? Is it up to the director entirely at that point? If so, I absolutely have no problem with him asking for a fee for HIMSELF.
Did SU say, you can do these things, but if you decide to, you have to do it for free?
The kids on scholly cannot be paid per NCAA scholly rules, if I'm correct.
So why would I disagree with a person, taking time on his holiday, to do something OPTIONAL and requested, to be paid a fee for that sacrifice?
Yes, I do believe the university should be paid, then pay the money to him as a bonus, but something tells me that wasn't happening and wouldnt happen. So my boy went on his own.

And it's written into their goddamned contracts, AND it doesn't remotely approach what you're talking about. The director isn't hosting a summer music camp for high school students. What he's doing is the equivalent of scheduling extra football games for his personal profit.
He is a full time year round employee of Southern University, and is compensated as such. That doesn't just mean 12 weeks in the fall. It's 52 weeks a year, and it's whenever and wherever they perform. It's his FULL TIME JOB.
And, for the record, he might very well have incentives built into his employment contract for a prestigious invitation. I doubt Mardi Gras would apply.

Maybe so, but LSU refined it, cut the fat and the obnoxiously loud and out of tune horns, and added STTDB. What’s not to love?
