I always tell my kids to get their learning done while they're at school.

Honest question. Is homework in grade school really effective?
It seems like every year I hear parents complaining about having to fight with their kids to do homework. The parents have been working all day, they have to come home and do other stuff on top of helping kids with homework.
In some cases they do some of it for their kids (which I don't understand, my mom would have let me get an F before doing my homework).
I remember when I was in grade school and if we had homework during the weekend my parents made me do it Friday when I got home so I didn't have to worry about it for the rest of the weekend.. One Friday we had to write a paper for homework. I didn't feel like doing it when I got home so I told my parents I didn't have any homework. Sunday night I told them I forgot that I had to write a paper.
I got in trouble because they knew I was lying, but it seems like giving homework is bullshite.

If done correctly it can be effective and reinforce the lessons.
However I find for many teachers it’s just extra work. Homework needs to be well thought out

Unless the laws have changed in Texas, state laws enacted in the mid 80's require 25% of grade to come from homework. It's a number grade not a letter grade. No homework means best case a student ends up with a D. 70 is passing, below that not.

Frick state government. Biggest waste of time and money on the planet and should be eliminated.

Interestingly enough, the Texas state government I believe has about the same amount of workers as it did 30 years ago while the state population has boomed.

Homework is unnecessary the vast majority of the time
Except for topics involving STEM, grammar/composition, and developing good study habits in general. Kind of lazy, teaching-the-test mentality that is getting US students asses kicked by 3rd world shitholes in Algebra and composition. I know a local high school teacher who asked her students to read a classic poem and then write down how parts of it made them feel. "Some kinda way" is apparently the response de rigeur.

It really depends on the subject and content. There are some things that can be difficult to squeeze into a full school day if you’re following curriculum/planning (like exercises that require repetition for memory for instance).
There’s a fine line in sending homework home when it’s truly needed and when you’re just throwing out some busy work. Our school (high school) ended up creating a homework policy approved by our SBDM to limit it because it was getting wildly out of hand, especially over breaks.
