The problem isn't the dumbass fans who want to yell at refs and kids. The problem is no normal parents want to tell the arse clown to shut up.

Dumb.

This teaches nothing to no one, and is just as awkward as the yelling.

I remember playing youth sports. I never had an environment where no one cheered, but I'm pretty sure I would think it was weird and unnatural.

As usual, this is an attempt to punish the few by punishing the whole, instead of calling out the real offenders and telling them to shut the hell up. The reason it teaches nothing is because it is passive aggressive. Everyone under the cheer ban will think it's because of "those other assholes" who yell at the refs too much. In order to be effective, you have to directly call out and correct the real offenders. "Blanket bans" and "symbolic" actions like this are ineffective and easily forgotten. They inconvenience the many and mask the leagues' reluctance to take action against bad people.

Oh man I have seen it. Guys who play college soccer, coach high school teams and referee get dog cussed by parents who have never even watched soccer. It's embarrassing.

You can always tell it's going to be a shite show when the opposing parents don't know where to sit on the sidelines.

As we play better tournaments the parents get better as well.

It wouldn't bother me. When I'm playing, I don't notice anything coming from the fans.

I read the article and it didn't say quiet, it said no discourse with the ref. Treat them like professionals and call them Ref or Mr/Ms Ref.

You can still yell Go Johnny...or in my case "Get your arse in gear Johnny!"

I hope you are just joking. Nothing worse than the guy who gets into his kids head. Let the kid make the realization that he needs to get his arse in gear.

By the way, there is a camp at stanislaus next week. If you haven't looked into it you may want to.

Then I'm all for it. Theres really no reason for parents to talk to refs in youth soccer.

Maybe parents should learn the rules. I've lost count of times I've heard parents yell that you can't kick the ball above your waist or some shite like that. Also, they are usually yelling a kids between 15-19 that are very new and inexperienced. Your 10 year old is not playing in a competitive league. Everyone on the field from the players to the coaches to the refs are in the process of learning. I read a stat that something like only 1 out of 5 refs make it past their second year and the #1 cause for them quitting is abuse from parents and coaches.

In our league, 4 year olds play t-ball, 5-8 play coach pitch and 9+ play kid pitch

I guess it's to prepare the kids for the world of 6 year old coach pitch travel ball. LOL.

My boy has played forward mostly, but last year he was the one kid who they bounced around positions depending on where the talent was on the opposition. When he'd play center mid though he just wasn't as active as he needed to be...

He got picked up on a better team, same club, and that coach gave him center mid from day one and he'll be full time there now...you're right, he'll figure it out.

Outside of a 3v3 this weekend we're on a break...so he's got tennis camp next week up in Dhead. Sailing camp after that then we'll get back into soccer before the Stoke City camp at the end of the month.

I'll look into the camp next week and maybe we can watch some toward the end of the week.

No, they have to be silent during the game. The part about addressing the refs was before and after the game.

"Under the new code of conduct, all parents and visitors are required to be silent during games, with no cheering or jeering allowed. Parents are not allowed to “openly question an official’s judgment and honesty.”

The new rules say that “on game day, officials should be addressed as ‘Referee’ or ‘Mr. or Ms. Referee’ and not by name. Professional respect should be mutual and there should be no demeaning dialogue or gesture between the official and the parent.”

At a time when there's a shortage of refs and even fewer good refs, you think it's a good thing that these teenagers get berated by so many coaches and fans that they quit before they can get any useful experience?

Wow, THANK YOU. There would have been no way for me to find out about this but I kept searching. He's the only non-boarder there and he is LOVING it. Probably the best, most intense soccer thing he's ever done.

Thank you. (Extreme Performance is the company)
