Seems like getting police involved for a kid riding 1400 feet on a neighborhood road to get to property he has permission to ride is way overkill. Hell, I'd probably ask if I could have a turn
But, I love seeing kids having a good time outside. I'd keep an eye out for your kid if he was in my neighborhood. I always toss a wave to the kids who ride by my house on a four wheeler. Not annoyed by it at all.

Law and order. Thank your local LEOs for keeping your son safe.

Most people don't want to hear that shite.
Not every atv is a screaming 2 stroke Banshee. At normal speeds, my Rancher is almost as quiet as a car. Much much quieter than a Harley or a pocket rocket I hear screaming around town.
I am not saying they should be riden on streets just for fun but if ridden respectfully a short distance to get to an approved riding area, what's the big deal?

Huh.
4-5 years ago had something similar happen to me. I had been working on my 4 wheeler carb and wanted to wring it out to make sure it was running properly. So my brother and I take off on our 4 wheelers down this dirt road near home.
Went a few miles then crossed Bayou des Cannes. I noticed a LDWF truck in the field along the bayou bank and didn’t think anything of it. After a few hundred yards we hear a siren and see Green Jeans on our tail. I guess he had nothing better to do, or was tired of playing with his pecker.
Long story short, we each got a ticket for operating an unlicensed vehicle on a public roadway. When I was in my teens, my buddy and I used to ride our mini bikes for miles down this road and never got hassled.
This was in the middle of nowhere in Evangeline Parish. I guess the parish needed the money.

Son riding a four-wheeler/cop's warning
Just keep in mind, it’s 2023 now.
I hear you… this would have never happened in the late 80’s/early 90’s.
Yep, it woulda been a 3-wheeler.

In the 70s it would’ve been a Honda Mini Trail and/or XR75.

quote:You’re making an assumption here that the kid was taking it slow at a low RPM and didn’t have an obnoxiously loud exhaust. Which judging from his dad’s posts in this thread, wouldn’t be surprising if the kid was speeding up and down the road and/or had an aftermarket FMF pipe that could be heard from 2 blocks away
And the neighbor that didn’t have anything better to do than to call the police on a kid for riding a four wheeler on the street is a busybody piece of shite.

This happened to me in the eighties. My Dad went over to the guy that reported us and chewed his arse out. Never had a problem again.
This is before helmets on bikes. Boys who can be girls. That type crap.
Talk to the guys who’s is reporting them. No reports, no problems. Mafia justice.

Problem is, it's like 1/3 mile up the road and he would have to push it the entire way, and a 500+ lb. vehicle isn't easy to push.
OR... and hear me out here... You could be a good Father and put his 4 wheeler on a trailer and tow it down to the church for him. Possibly even talk to the Pastor about storing the 4 wheeler somewhere on the property so you don't have to tow it more than once.

It's the property of a church we attend. The pastor said he can ride there anytime he wants.
Also the Pastor is probably molesting your son.

this whole thread is fricking stupid. you basically want someone to say your son can do that without you getting arrested or cited. Its illegal and negligent on your part.. grow the frick up.

The fact that you're more concerned about the validity of what the cop told you and not your son's behavior speaks volumes.
Couldn't agree more....its important for kids to see their parents doing the right thing. Questioning authority is a moral imperative. It doesn't have to be done ugly but doing it with respect is a good thing for a kid to learn.
In this instance the cops seem to be doing the right thing. They won't be so nice going forward...they have provided you with your instructions and it is incumbent upon you to follow them. IN this instance they are probably correct....the trouble is when they are not.
