Your 21 year old son can’t find his own neighborhood?

Anywhere around lake Travis is safe. It is in the country. West Austin is the nicest side of Austin. Is he wanting to live in actual Austin and commute every day to lake Travis? That will be a bitch unless he lives on the west side of town.

The location is nice and hip and cool. But the rent is awful. Very awful. Your son will get an early lesson in life.

He’s looking to rent a house but obviously not a sprawling estate

Unless he has no budget, renting a house is impractical for him. I'd look for an apartment and / or roommate to share the cost. I'm not sure how you go about finding roommates these days...as craigslist could be a shitshow.

There aren't really any bad areas for crime near Lake Travis. He may want to look as far as Bee Cave though if he wants something reasonable on cost.

What is his budget? I would assume you'd need $1500-2000 to rent anything decent in the city at this point.

His max is about $2K. He did get a pretty good gig an Miraval Resort as a sous chef.

Crime isn’t an issue on Lake Travis, and Lakeway is pretty central. May be able to find an apt. or condo around there.

He should start looking for a roommate.
