historically one of the greatest militaries ever

During the reign of Henry II of England the English controlled half of France.

Edwars III of England: Battles of Crecy and Poitiers

Henry V of England forced Charles VI of France to disinherit his son in favor of Henry's line. Battle of Agincourt.

Napoleon had them rolling for a while, but lost in the end. Perhaps the only time when the French military was great.

They fought the Germans three times, lost all three.

Hell when they were Gaul they lost to the Romans.

it's an insult and a punchline

I think you're thinking of the Libya raids after the Pan Am bombing.

Some things are worth more than blood.

You can make excuses and rationalize it, but the images of Hitler laughing and joking as he tours a pristine Paris and German troops marching in parade down the Champs-Élysées while London and Warsaw and Leningrad are hammered into dust because they refused to surrender will last as long as wars are fought.

easy to say from an ocean-protected country that had to push hard propaganda to join foreign wars, and when it's not your damn blood.

I wasn't exaggerating when I said generations were lost.

Russians, and by then, soviets have a different view on the value of human life than western countries.

and the UK never had nazi boots on its shores. Air raid resistance is way different than what the French had coming at them.

Do you still fly and can you "climb" over Baton Rouge sometime? Asking for a friend.

I used to hear the SR boom pretty regularly when I was a kid growing up. I couldn't tell you the last time I heard a sonic boom, though. Maybe a shuttle landing when we were in the glide path?

USMC says hold my beer

quote:

A Marine F-35B aircraft has crashed near Naval Air Facility El Centro, Calif., following an air collision with a KC-130J, defense officials confirmed to USNI News.

At approximately 4 p.m. local time, “it was reported that an F-35B made contact with a KC-130J during an air-to-air refueling evolution, resulting in the crash of the F-35B. The pilot of the F-35B ejected successfully and is currently being treated,” read a statement from Marine Corps spokesman Capt. Joseph Butterfield to USNI News.
“The KC-130J is on deck in the vicinity of Thermal Airport. All crew members of the KC-130J have been reported safe.”

The KC-130, often used as an aerial refueler for Marine aviation, made an emergency landing near the Jacqueline Cochran Regional Airport in Therma, Calif., according to photos published by KESQ Channel 3.

In 2018, an F-35B went down outside of Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort in South Carolina. The pilot was recovered safely. In 2019, a Japanese F-35A crashed off the coast of Japan.

I think that’s backwards.

They don’t devalue human life, they do see life as hard though, and sacrifice as important.

This is a tangent, but the defense of Saumur is one or my favorite stories from the war.

The cadets from the nearby cavalry school held back and defeated a superior German force. And they chose to fight, inspite or Pétain’s order to cease resistance.

From Wikipedia

quote:

Why the battle took place is a bit of a mystery. The students provided the moral backbone to the defence; their decision to fight was probably because they would not accept the dishonour of simply retreating. The students were backed by other units and there were many instances of outstanding personal bravery, even though they knew it was only hours before the war would end and they were heavily outnumbered and outgunned. Many Wehrmacht officers commented on the bravery of the French students.

I wouldn't call it devaluation, but I would say they have a higher expectation of shitty things happening and not living to the "golden years"

michael malice puts it in the best perspective when he talks about it.

also: a much more collective view vs. the western individualist

You mean...half of France controlled all of England. After a French vassal conquered England.

Bouvines—French shattered an English-HRE coalition army.
It was primarily French warriors who won the first Crusade.
Bonus: Edward III spoke French as his primary language.

Then got beat by a peasant girl at Orleans and lost the war.

I only fly lawnmowers with wings. Can make a pass at 1000 feet and make you think your neighbor is mowing but that’s about it.

If you heard a very loud noise in Paris or the Paris region, don't worry. There was no explosion, it was a fighter plane that broke the sound barrier.

Please don't call emergency lines.

Leave it to the French to punish a warrior for doing what warriors are supposed to do.
