Some even have homes and support families on their panhandling income.

Well there you go. The kindness of strangers is keeping them and their family taken care of. I thought that personal charity is what people wanted instead of government hand outs?

Nothing should be done by the cities. The cities have enough crap to clean up without going out looking for my shite to interfere with and stick their big brother nose in.

Some reporter started begging in NYC or something to do a story about it. He was profiting like crazy.

I don't give them any money, personally.

Throwing money at the problem, literally in this case, does not fix it. Behavior has to change.

I heard that everyone wins in Vegas too!

It is just an urban legend that panhandlers make this much money. If you really could make that much money wouldn't everybody be doing it?

What's wrong with underneath the overpass? Shaded. They have a roof over their head.

A friend of a friend lived in DC and would panhandle after he finished his work day. Apparently pulled in over 20k a year on the side. This was years ago.

I will give to the ones who have dogs. I have went and picked up burgers for the homeless with dogs numerous times. Every single time they gave half of the food to their dog.

Article on panhandlers in KC

Here's a good article that was written in a local magazine in kansas city in 06 that chronicles a few panhandlers around town and what their typical hauls for the day were and how they wound up doing it

Wow. That's a skewed view of reality.

Personally, I don't think a desire for small government and the elimination of programs that perpetuate poverty is mutually exclusive with a desire to see those asking for a handout to actually be as poor as they present themselves.

I know an upper-middle-class-turned-crust-punk white girl who likes to tell people that she used to "live on the street" even though she was 100% homeless by choice and would go back to her house after a day or two. She used to easily make a hundred dollars a day panhandling, sometimes in the multiple hundreds. This alone should be enough to convince people to stop giving out money.

itd take more than 35k for me to sit on the street begging. id guess the 100k ones are likely few and far between but i wouldnt be shocked if someone could drum that rate up short term in isolated cases - especially if they have one of the better gimmicks

150 bucks in a 12 hour day is only 12.5 an hour. if they average a buck every 5 minutes they are on pace. in a busy area that doesnt seem CRAZY

If he chose any other profession to get money from people he would be considered an entrepreneur AND if he did it without paying taxes, he would be lauded a hero.
