Pass a local 10 cent gas tax in all four or five parishes majorly affected affected by the Miss. bridge. Build the new bridge between west Baton Rouge and Iberville. All cars registered in the four or five parishes get to use the bridge free of toll with their parish pass. All other vehicles using the bridge will have to pay a $3 for a regular sized vehicle, $6 for anything hauling basic trailer, $10 for all 18 wheelers each way.

Based on my random projections of 14,000 regular vehicles, 1,500 vehicles over the basic vehicle load, and 2,000 18 wheelers, we'd collect over $518,000,000 in tolls in 20 years. (There are estimates that 25,000 to 30,000 vehicles would use this bridge)These numbers represent paying customers. For reference, approximately 107,000 people a day were crossing the "new" bridge in 2005. That's probably increased by about 13,000 since totaling 120,000. I estimate roughly 20-25% of traffic would use this toll including the "free riders."

Add approximately $365,000,000 in gas taxes and now we are at $883,000,000 over twenty years. This would be more than enough to woo enough federal dollars to build the damn thing. Make sure we name the bridge after me too.

What about brake tags that have chips in them and when it's overdue, spikes come out of the road to stop that car from crossing the bridge. They can also blow fire for minorities or those with overdue child support

I forgot to add that the gas tax goes away after 20 years but the cars in the parishes that paid the tax still get to use it for free after the 20 years. The tolls are still collected and the remaining funds are equally distributed to the parishes for their local road maintenance. This gives the local areas more revenue and increases productivity in the local areas thereby saving local companies more money and spurring further economic growth.

If I had access to all those studies this stuff would be a cake walk. It's obvious the whole state doesn't want to help the metro Baton Rouge area. We suck it up and pay the tax we are willing to pay. Then we charge everybody else for use of what they wouldn't help pay. My only concern is I'm not sure how you can toll a bridge that gets federal dollars. That's my only kink at this point.

State law prohibits the use of a toll on anything other than the passageway that is being tolled. Furthermore, it requires that once the project is paid off all tolls must cease.

State law needs to be changed or make sure the 10 cent tax isn't just tied to the new bridge. You can extend the toll payments out further on the actual bridge still raise the money to pay for the bridge as the back up if not enough toll money is collected for the yearly payments. Of course, this is where we'd need some early money from the Feds because the bridge would take years to complete.

Also, leave an option to refinance the bridge or just make the toll bridge payable over 30 years.

What's the deal with the causeway? I'm not brushed up on my history of that. But there has been a toll on that since I can remember and it's gone up recently. I know that bitch was built in the 50s.

At 43,000 vehicles a day, they should be printing money.

Fixing the potholes, ruts and surfaces on existing roads and synchronizing the lights would go a long way to moving traffic efficiently.

Look into the tolled bypass around round rock, Austin and San Marcos.

It has been a failure.
