Mental Health Reform is needed.

I love my therapist of four years. At times, I have thought about her safety with potential clients that could have psychotic behavior.
Im sure some social workers could be assholes and challenge a client but I certainly would not be alone with some man that had anger issues.
I don’t know what protocols are in place for such a situation.

If your therapist has her own business then she can pick and choose her clients. Due to safety reasons I think most LCSW should go this route or work inpatient.
Of course it's not realistic but these days well I just think of that nurse practitioner lady that got murdered by the thug POS because she wouldn't refill his benzos.
If the company / state org you work for doesn't give a shite about your safety then maybe it's time to move on.
+1 that institutions need to be brought back. Not as they were before obviously but in some form for sure.

Good social workers are a massive asset and everyone should be thankful for them. It’s how they’re utilized/not utilized that’s the issue.
Y’all remember that video of the cop with a semi automatic rifle reporting to a normal arse calm homeless dude sitting in an outdoor bus stop bench thing? Someone called the cops on him and these dudes snuck up and put 30 rounds in his gut from 40 yards while he sat there for not IMMEDIATELY doing what they said.
I’d ask why the shite our government can’t figure out that that wasn’t the proper response or outcome but…..it’s the government and all of us on the right know why the government sucks dick at everything. A social worker being present and the lead on that call would have saved a life with MINIMAL effort.
On the other hand, we have social workers dealing with counts like the murderer in the OP.
None of it makes sense to me.
Our government sucks.

Such a misleading statement. Of course “normal” folks (99,000 people in a city of 100,000) commit a larger percentage of crime than the 1000 people “dealing” with mental health issues. I also wonder if they exclude psychotic people who don’t acknowledge their diagnosis, since they are not actively “dealing with mental health issues”. You have to acknowledge the problem to deal with it.
God bless our social workers. Getting a masters degree (MSW) and putting in the hours to get licensed, with little financial gain, all to be treated like crap by the majority of the people you are trying to help.

my dad was a social worker for 40 years at the VA. He wasn't t a leftist by any means but did care very much for his patients. At times he had to have an armed guard outside his office. He worked with quite a few paranoid schizophrenic Vietnam vets. Mike Graham, the old weatherman, was one of his guards for a while.

But a lot of that has to do with ever shrinking budgets in community health, who often get lopped in with other social service cuts.
The solution would seem to be less visits/clients, not putting staff in danger by sending them alone.
