So you've just been given command of the Confederate army in late-June 1863....

Your forces are approaching Gettysburg, Pennsylvania when you get word that battle has been enjoined there. What do you do differently if history could afford you such a chance?

Turn head straight for DC - force the Union army to march to attempt to cut me off. Hopefully separate the fast moving infantry from it’s heavier supplies and weapons. Maybe use my cavalry to then attack the supply line from the rear and cut off the supplies and heavier weapons and choose ground to force the union infantry to attack me after a forced march where I control the battlefield.

I damn sure don’t attack uphill against fortified positions on the 2nd day

If they would have pressed the attack and overran the position when they had the advantage on the afternoon of the 1st day and not allowed the union to regroup, reinforce and fortify the uphill position maybe they would have won the battle of Gettysburg.

It was lost on the 1st day when the confederates overwhelmed the union troops but pulled back and celebtrated rather than pressing the attack until dark and routing them. Gave the unions a chance to dig in and reinforce.

I withdraw back below the Jamie Dixon line and start a guerrilla campaign against the north and outlast their will to wage war.

Probably panic. I'm wildly unqualified.

We’ll make spears. Hundreds of them, long spears. Twice as long as a man

1. Order Jeb Stuart to do his job and find the Union army instead of riding off on a glory hounding cavalry raid.

2. Make like hell for Harrisburg and try to knock Pennsylvania out of the war. The South can never win militarily. The only victory can be political.

AONV had the advantage the first day.

If they pushed the federals off Cemetery Hill the Union would have had to of retreated from the field several miles.

Losing Cemetery Hill would mean no fish hook. No defenses for Lee to attack the 2nd and 3rd day. He could have pulled back after regrouping his army and found a better place to fight.

Ewell not pressing that cost them greatly.

Was fortunate for Hancock and Howard. They stood firm there and on Culp’s Hill. Good defensive ring.

Warren finding Little Round Top and securing the Federal left. Tight compact lines were too much in foreign land. Good thing for the US.

Edit. Federal left. Not right

I surrender the Army of Northern Virginia to General Meade, the lawful representative of my country, the United States of America.
