So what happened to the 9X Sidewinder missile?

Officials said the F-22 soared to an altitude of around 58,000 feet, firing an AIM-9X Sidewinder missile toward the balloon floating less than 10,000 feet above it.
Did it explode on contact? Or did it pierce the weather balloon and keep going? If so where did the missile end up?

ATA missiles are typically built with proximity fuses (or a digital variant thereof) and detonate their warhead when within a the proximity of the target that is reasonably certain to cause sufficient damage to that target so as to disable or destroy it. They are not like bullets that hit and penetrate the target, nor do they hit a target and explode on contact. In the case of Sidewinder and other ATA missiles, the warhead exploded prior to contact with the target creating shrapnel that is carried into the target due to residual inertial motion.
Pieces of the missile were turned into shrapnel which shredded the target and destroyed it.
The missile wound up in thousands of pieces scattered on the bottom of the Atlantic.
That's about as clear as I can make it for you.

Did we really need to use a half million dollar missile?
A flame thrower mounted on the front of an A-10 would have been cool as shite..

Missile was unarmed. It was used to pierce the balloon envelope. Missile splashed down range.
