I rarely turn my truck off when I get gas. I use my truck for work so I'm in it all day going from jobsite to jobsite and doing paperwork, etc... if I turned my truck off every time I jump out of it I'd go through a starter once a year.

Do they turn off their cars in NASCAR while refueling? Didn't think so

Well this is what I know. When I was about 12 I was in the folks barn at about 5 am and an old guy that helped with the cattle took a long pull on his Lucky Strike while sitting on a tractor, flicked it towards a 5 gallon gas can sitting on the floor which promptly caught fire and burned my parents barn to the ground along with all of the equipment stored inside it.

Most likely something around the can was gas soaked, that is far more likely than the gas itself igniting from a cig.

If there's enough gasoline fumes in the air around you to ignite from just a spark then you have bigger problems.

I leave it running in the summer...I let the A/C run to keep it cool--car is black and I am usually in a suit.

Same with smoking at the pump.

Not actually a big deal.

Now lighting up at the pump is rolling the dice.

Leave your car running. Be on the phone and smoking. Crazy how hard it is to blow yourself up unless you are muslim.

There would be no doubt if gas was within it's explosive/flammable range (1.4 and 7.6 percent of air) any more or less will not ignite, the scent would be overpowering.

GA has some type of rule, not law regarding it. LEOs will get on you. Walking inside while you leave the head in the tank clicked and pumping (with engine off) is against the law here and will get you a ticket. Not sure what the ticket accuses one of.

A lot like breaking someone's neck to kill them, it's only in the movies.

I always assumed it was dangerous to keep the car on during refueling because of what I had been told as a youngster.

The negative here is that it is possible to mess with the compression in the tank if you have the gas cap off and the engine running.

Used to fly with this old pilot who had snuck into Canada to enlist and had flown spitfires in the early days of WW2.
He used to lean on the leading edge of the wing while the lineman pumped fuel into the plane.

He died of cancer at 93.

I used to fill up helicopters while they were running. At night you could see the static electricity in the tank.

What correlation

Things thAt cause spArks some times

500 prior events 100% prove no spark ever happens near fumes.
No cig ever ignited fumes.

Well, I have done this quite a bit. But I'm not using gasoline to light the grill.
