I've had a drivers license for 24 years, never turned the car off to pump my fuel.

I went to a camp was a kid and they made us get out of a van when putting in gas in case the car exploded. Standing ten feet away was apparently much safer.

Way back when, it was important to turn it off. Cars backfired regularly and back then, automakers were not always putting the gas fill cap opposite the exhaust.

Today's cars don't backfire and the exhaust is opposite the filling side.

As i was driving by I saw 2 guys jump starting a car at the pumps with jumper cables before. I promptly accelerated

Why?

People are so dumb. Unless there were gas fumes being released directly next the cable terminal, and there was a spark, there might be a quick gas fume burst. No damage to anyone.

LINK Unlike the movies, it is almost impossible for a lit cigarette to ignite gasoline vapor in a un-confined open air space like at a gas station, a lit cigarette thrown into gasoline liquid will actually extinguish itself. "One particular study attempted over 2,000 different scenarios and situations where gasoline and a lit cigarette could interact, and not a single attempt resulted in the gasoline catching on fire." The no-smoking signs around gas pumps are due to the danger of using a cigarette lighter which has a higher probability of igniting gasoline vapor.

Well this is what I know. When I was about 12 I was in the folks barn at about 5 am and an old guy that helped with the cattle took a long pull on his Lucky Strike while sitting on a tractor, flicked it towards a 5 gallon gas can sitting on the floor which promptly caught fire and burned my parents barn to the ground along with all of the equipment stored inside it.

Now maybe someone tossed a match at the same time as that smoke got tossed but I'm going with the cigarette and living proof instead of what this great Internet says.

But...smoke up Johnny.

If jets can refuel midair, I think it's okay to leave your vehicle running when filling up.

Yes, it's a myth. Just like flicking a lighter right next to the entrance to the gas tank. It does nothing.

That's a bullshite myth right?

Just make sure you are doing 100mph while you gas up and you should be fine. In fact, you will save on fuel...

And there has never been one.

So, as a petroleum chemist, I say it is impossible.

Yes.

And smoke a cig.

However, you will die of something awful and painful if you smoke. But that is another thread

Ever seen someone smoke while putting gas in their lawn mower?

Or use a lighter while starting their bbq?
