quote:Hong Kong isn't completely Democratic & has never been Democratic. For nearly 100 years Every single Hong Kong City Governor was appointed by the British Crown & the Governor completely appointed the City's governing Council members( mostly British expats).
Understandably the people of Hong Kong (HK has been basically separate from China and is completely democratic and capitalistic) are quite sceptical
Only recently ,( a few years before the 1997 handover) have a certain small percentage of lawmakers been directly elected to serve alongside the usual Government appointees.HK never had a democracy under the UK & probably won't be getting one anytime soon under China , unfortunately.

I wonder how many millions the British Empire was responsible for killing( directly or indirectly)?
The Bengal Famine & millions of other British India deaths/ famines , slave trade , Boer Concentration / Death Camps in S. Africa,etc....... "
And stop telling anyone about the " democracy" of HK under British rule which is demonstrably false.

Do you really believe this many people would riot and protest based on their support of fleeing murder charges? That's a shallow belief.

The long and short of it is that they are trying to save democracy in Hong Kong, which is an uphill battle ever since the UK handed it back to China.

There is no democracy in Hong Kong & hasn't been democracy in HK over the previous 100 years under British rule.

I would have thought provisions would have been made for extreme cases like this. Sorry for my ignorance, I figured posting here would give me a head start on reading up on it.
Congratulations comrade. You have been propoganded. Welcome to the party.

No, that's not what I was saying at all. I just never realized what kicked it off.

I think it is more complex than this. While this case might have intensified things, it really comes down to the people of Hong Kong not wanting China to interfere with their democracy.

While there may not have been democracy prior, it is undeniable that they have enjoyed many of the same freedoms that we in America do due to British law, which is something they now face possibly losing.
Additionally, they do have something closeish to a democracy right now due to not being under British control since 97. Whether it is exactly a democracy or not aside, it is far better than the nonsense the Chinese would enforce upon them.
Edit: my latter statement may be a little off regarding the current state of their government.

The leaflet is probably a production of the Chinese Communists.
That said, I've never been able to muster much sympathy for the people protesting the People's Republic.
What exactly do they advocate instead? Buddhist Feudalism? Islam?
It's one of those two things for about 90% of them, and for the rest the whole thing is basically just "Daddy called me fat and I'm mad."
None of them are calling for a society anything like the one I live in.
