Not a political discussion. Just saying I was surprised at level of access random people have to lawmakers. We all saw that crow screaming at Flake by the elevator last week. I was like "so anyone can just heckle a Senator at his place of work?" And it happened again today. Same woman still stalking Flake.

You weren't aware that constituents can conversant with their elected officials or attend sessions in which their laws are made?

I think he's referring to the fact that any one of those people could have attacked a senator or someone else at any point and there would have been little to stop it from happening.

I went there in the 90s and I don't even remember a metal detector. I walked all around the capitol and into the House and Senate chambers.

I went there this summer but made a reservation through my Congressman. Security increased a lot after 9/11. She didn't just waltz on in there.

Elected representatives SHOULD fear what the people might do if they become tyrants.

They work for the United States citizens and it is all funded by tax money. Why would citizens not be granted access to the building?

Was with a coworker on a trip to DC, flew in early and we decided to visit the Capitol. They pulled her aside after going through screening, and out of her purse they took her mace, scissors and wine opener. Then they let her enter. I asked her if she was worried?

She said not until I realized that, I was able to board our plane with all that in my purse.

I live in DC (well, right across the river) and work in federal buildings a bunch.

In most buildings that don't have classified spaces, if you don't have Federal ID you can sign in as a visitor. You have to give a name, the name and office of someone you're visiting, and present your driver's license. The guards don't call ahead to check, especially if you come in during morning rush. You'll have to walk through a metal detector but that's about it.

Keep in mind that people who work in these buildings sometimes forget their own badges for whatever reason, so there needs to be a way for them to get to work with minimum fuss. Same thing with constituents and lobbyists.

We have a republic. One person's tyrant is another person's patriot. That's why we have elections. You don't like what your representative is doing? Vote them out. You dont attack them like vigilantes.
