Just say that it's a piece of art that someone painted for you, they don't have to know that it's supposed to be your daughter

My other neighbor is a fairly well known local artist. Although he is known mostly for painting dogs and hunting scenes.

Give your daughter some paint and let her go to town on the canvas. Tell the bosslady that your daughter loved the painting so much that she wanted to become a painter but innocently fricked up the portrait. So sad... yet so inspiring.

It's difficult. I have a friend who is a portrait artist, and he's REALLY good. Even he works and reworks paintings based on customer's opinions. He's always sending a second and third rendition. This guy was at the top of class in LSU med school before he quit to pursue art. Just saying, I don't think it's that easy and maybe she'll touch it up for you.

Agree with putting it in the daughters room. Once the daughter decides she doesn't want it and can tell the lady she doesn't want it, then it can go to the attic or trash.

The answer is pretty simple. Just hang it in your daughter's room. That way it is on "public display" so the artist isn't offended, but most visitors to your house won't be going in your daughter's room any way.

Every time she comes over, have your daughter stand right next to it. Then stare your wifes boss in the eyes and say, "It's...like...there...are...two...of...them" Maybe she'll figure out it needs to get touched up.

Did she paint yours using reference photos? I'm a bit of a hobby painter (very novice). Portrait drawing (something I've not attempted) is said to be best done with a live reference, or a nice collection of photos with different angles, lighting, etc. and preferably with no over-expression (like a big smile, which is what younger kids tend to do in photos).
She knows her granddaughter's face pretty well I assume, but all it takes it one small alteration or too much/little emphasis on a single facial feature to screw it up.
If the painting is dried and varnished, I'd store it out of sight but in a dry place, protected so it'll look nice if you ever need to hang it for an evening.

how old is your daughter? If she's growing a lot she'll look different in a few months anyway. Just say it was her when she was younger.
