I just got back last weekend from Gulf Shores and the kids thought it was fun holding their breath

How many of you tards honk your horn while driving through the tunnel?

And I remember going to Florida when the only way was the Bankhead tunnel and in MS you drove along the beach because I-10 wasn't finished.

Apparently you don't understand that usually there's lots of federal subsidies involved in projects like this.

The cost to the federal govt. is probably a good bit more than the cost to Mobile, so with all that money involved it makes perfect sense for local politicians to get it built and take credit for doing so.

Just in case it wasn't said often enough in this 4 page thread, the OP is a complete fricktard. Mobile traffic on either side of the tunnel is atrocious . The bridge is needed.

Does this plan involve a new 6 lane Bayway as well? If it doesnt then a new bridge is a waste.

Just for perspective a new bridge over the Mississippi river cost $800 million...

Actually the bridge is very much needed. A tunnel is a maintenance and traffic nightmare. They are in a very similar pedicament as BR. They need a bridge but deciding on a route or location is ALMOST impossible.

you think that's bad? Louisiana built a huge arse bridge crossing the Mississippi from St. fricking Francisville to Got damn False River!

A bridge from one shite hole to another.

Its like some people have never driven through a tunnel before in there lives. OH MY GOD!!!!!! ITS A TUNNEL!!!!!!!! let me slow down... I'M SO NERVOUS!!!!!!

It slows down because the highway drops from 4 lanes to 2 lanes into a tunnel with a substandard curve right before it (going east anyway).

I guess you've never driven from LA to FL. There's always fricking traffic in Mobile.

Yup during rush hour right when you get to that tunnel heading to Florida to go under that damn Bay or whatever. Traffic is backed up for miles. And you have to go slow because of the curve.

I live in Baldwin County and this is much needed. The beach traffic gets pretty bad, and Mobile is the worst bottleneck on I-10 from Jacksonville to California. The bridge has to be very tall to get the cargo ships and cruise ships (hopefully) under it.
