I did, knew exactly 1 person that was going to be there and I only had met him one time through some friends. Looking back on it, that was one of the most enjoyable parts of my life.
Those types of moments where you get all freaked out are the moments I look back on and remember the most (in a good way).

I grew up in the midwest, but I went to college a thousand miles away at LSU. I hopped on a jet, then a rattling turboprop to Baton Rouge on my own without knowing a single soul. I remember staggering into the claustrophobic Kirby Smith dorm elevator with my bags, the air somehow redolent with the tang of vomit from the previous night's revelers even though the compartment had been cleaned that morning. The creaking, grinding ascent. The narrow halls perforated by rows of identical doors. The rising tension about meeting my roommate. The strangeness and exotic heaviness of the Southern air, the Southern culture, the other ways of existing as yet unknown to this young man who spent his boyhood contemplating through quiet suburban winters. It was one of the most terrifying things I have ever done.
It was also the beginning of my life, my real life. LSU gave me my best friend, my wife, my ebullient spirit - all great gifts. Press on. Be brave.
