I bet you thought that sounded good in your head before producing that diarrhea of text

So here's the deal. There was this short piece written about Nebraska fans smelling like corndogs. I forget by whom. A fan of one of their rivals. This makes sense because they are the cornhuskers. An Auburn fan took the short piece, and didn't change a thing except to replace Nebraska with LSU. And because it doesn't make any sense and because Louisianians take such pride on our cuisine like you pointed out there was a flat rejection and confusion by LSU fans for the nickname. And this is why it stuck.
It's like if you are in middle school and someone gives you a nickname that you don't like. The more you let people know that you don't like it the more that it is going to stick. They know it doesn't make any sense, and that just makes the corndog thing stick even harder.

I dunno. Occasionally I'll be at our spot near the parade ground and smell the distinct smell of fried food wafting through the air and think to myself,"damn those motherfrickers are kinda right"

"They're dipped in mustard" which to them is similar to LSU colors.
I've received that as an answer before.
Makes about as much sense to call them fries, Being dipped in ketchup and all.

I told this redneck that we have been called many names b/f but it is usually something like gumbo, crawfish, etoufee or jambalaya.
You've been called etouffee and crawfish before? Sorry to hear that, man.

The biggest problem with the OP is he was trying to get logic from a gump.

Yes this is true except it was Ole Miss that took a hold of it snd ran. It happened when I was in school. I remember the prevailing thought was because the campus smelled like a carnival on gameday because of all the fried food. And corndogs are a particularly "low-brow" and "simple-man" type food, it was thought to fit for that reason also.
Just came to become "LSU fans smell like corndogs". And then Katy Perry agreed.
