So I come home from work to find that my dog has destroyed about 1000 sq ft of lawn

All in the same area, not spread out across the yard. She has a huge fenced in yard and chose to literally scrape the grass off of it least 1000 ft.² over the course of the 12 hours I was gone yesterday. Not digging holes, she just removed the grass. Looks like someone with a metal detector in a spade spent a week there finding bottle caps everywhere. Is there some sort of insect that dogs will smell and go after? This is a huge mystery to me. But come spring time that area of the yard is going to take forever to recover

Nope. Pretty sure your dog just hates you. We all understand the dog.

Your dog is bored. She is not being challenged physically or mentally.
You need to exercise your dog before you leave for work and after you come home from work.
The digging will stop. In the meantime, try a thunder vest. And weigh it down slightly until you can make the change.

maybe it wasn't the dog? Was there an X somewhere in your yard?

I doubt its moles, the soil below is clay but it may be worth throwing some mothballs out to get rid of any grubs

Yeah that’s what I’m afraid of, she’s been getting a lot of indoor time lately and I’m fearful she was just out right protesting being made to be out in the yard for so long

What type of dog? If she is a terrier, she will frick shite up of she smells something in the ground. That's in their blood, but do you have toys or bones in there for her to chew on? If they get bored they are going to do something, so if there isn't anything there for them to play with, they are going to find something. Just like kids.

She thinks so having grass as a memorial is dumb, too. Good protest, I say.

It’s hard for me to fully commit to the idea that it was simply restlessness, the grass removal was in a very specific area of the huge fenced in yard. But it seems like the obvious culprit

I think your dog may have been on meth.

Toxic to dogs.
