Are revenues diminishing?

Federal funding to the state is diminishing plus the overall amount that is available for "match" is less. It is questionable whether the state will have the match funds for the full amount available from FHWA. Federal funding goes by the old "use it or lose it" rule. If you can't provide the required match, you don't get it and those funds are redistributed to other states. To add salt to the wound, the inability to "use it" is taken into consideration in later years when funding is originally distributed to the states. It's a snowball effect.

Do we know where the current gas tax is going? Is it going to new roads, bridges, and maintenance? Is there are process where projects are ranked in order of importance or do certain areas come first?

I have answered this numerous times.

What I've learned from this thread is that people assume that all taxes will be misused. They are convinced that the tax would not be used for roads and bridges, although, it was clearly specified that it had to be used for roads and bridges. You will not convince some people that taxes are good. Other people will reject anything to do with JBE on principle. It's called cutting off your nose to spite your f

Prople look at the big picture and realize you can't trust our govt, with our tax dollars.

They see poor roads, bridges, schools, leaking roofs, and many substandard examples of how our taxes are spent on the most important items govt. is there to provide.

And then we see film makers, nursing home people, govt, officials, and other special interests getting favors at a time when our elected officials whine that we have to raise taxes or education and health care will suffer mightily.

We currently have a gas tax, and people have seen how those taxes were spent. We see a wonderful bridge in SF with no traffic and a boondoggle in BR that has been ignored got 30 years at the I10 bridge. We see money siphoned away to the state police, and to pay for many other things that are not infrastructure.

You can promise transparency, but when they decide to build a highway in Amite or in one of the governor's buddy's district there is nothing Ed can do.

Pretty sure Louisiana has some of the lowest gas prices in the country and hasn't had a gas tax increase since the early 90s. What I find most humorous is the people that oppose this tax (which is only $2.55 for 15 gallons) were all in support of the highway tolls started in that thread last week and bitch about traffic.

I see your point. The Audubon Bridge is the biggest waste of tax dollars I can think of. But, are we to let infrastructure crumble?

i'll ask this again..instead of a gas tax, would you support legalization and subsequent taxation of rec. use marijuana?i mean we are in the hole and all, wouldn't now be a good time?Colorado and Alaska don't have a problem with it...why should we?

If you are arguing that the amount of landlines hasn't diminished by leaps and bounds you're just being obtuse.

I've always supported that.

But I doubt it would go to infrastructure. This gas tax would.

Not only should they raise the tax on gas, they should raise the tax on cigarettes, and legalize and tax marijuana. Something needs to be done to this state before it turns into Haiti

You're the typical "what I am currently involved in doesnt represent the problem" type person.

I bet the amount of landlines today is less than 50% of what it was just 10 years ago.

So is infrastructure truly crumbling? Am I to believe the reports on the roads and bridges that were released just before the gas tax was proposed earlier this year pre-session?? Any unbiased reports on road/bridge conditions out there? "If we don't get these tax increases there's a chance LSU football will be cancelled."

I never said land lines haven't diminished, all I said is there are plenty of land lines and a tax on them already which is designed to aid the deaf.

Now show me where there isn't enough revenue currently to help the deaf. I haven't seen that demonstrated, but maybe you know something I don't know.

I did find this:
The bill is expected to raise almost $5 million per year and will go to Telecommunications for the Deaf Fund. The new tax will more than double the fund’s budget from 2.3-million to 4.6-million.

If infrastructure is crumbling it's because those in charge let it crumble. They use funds on other things and whine about the problems.

So why should we let those in charge have more money before they have shown they can wisely spend what they have now

4.6 million for 78k Deaf and Hard of Hearing means is $59 dollars per person bro.

You're gonna tell me that that is enough to provide services for the Deaf & HH?

What services are provided?

This fund helps 20k people a year, and was found by an auditor to have wasteful spending

Yes because the head of LCD (La Commission for the Deaf) who was recently removed from her position had no clue what she was doing

ETA: Look I am in you guys boat that the government taxing the shite out of us and then pissing the money away is bullshite. But crying over 4.5 cents a month that if appropriately used is needed by a segment of the community and suffers dearly without it is really just being a whiny bitch.
