Going to turn into 2008 when we had inches of snow when nothing was predicted?

With temps aloft pushing 50, that isnt going to happen.

In West Baton Rouge. I seen a few small flakes. Mostly it looks like heavy dust floating in the air.

what does it take to get moisture inside of a 540 line this far south? it seems like most winter setups it is a shallow cold layer that warms up a bunch as you go up as moisture being pulled out the gulf from a southern wind at higher altitudes

i think 2008 was moisture wrapping around the back side of a low, is it just the right circumstance where moisture is pulled around a low and is sourced from the north rather than the south?

The dry air is just taking the guts out of the precip as it moves East. The closer it gets to 49 it just starts disappearing. Which is notable because that little Southward dip in the freezing line has made it down to Opelousas where it is right at 32°. Laffy is still at 36°.

HRRR has done well on honing in on the temp drop and the progression of the freezing line.

You answered it:

It is just hard to tap into the flow off of the Gulf without raising temps. When you're talking about a marginal sub-freezing setup, one or two degrees makes all the difference.

ive read it can snow with surface temperatures up to near 50, it's all about how deep the layer of 32 and below is and how moisture is sourced

Sure, you can get snow with those surface temps. Ice and accumulations is what I'm more thinking of.

Looking at soundings, there is 50°+ aloft at the 850mb(ish) level. You're going to be hard pressed to get anything more than flurries as far as snow is concerned.

Looks like the roads tomorrow will be a disaster. All state offices will be open at their normal time, including universities. Driving on ice. Looking forward to navigating around them.

Radar shows ice in Br. Anything making it to ground? Odd because surface temps are still 34

Should I get out of my warm bed just to see if sleet is falling?

Ch 18 shows we've dipped down to 33. We're getting there

Just walked outside. I can confirm in BR, right now, just a cold light rain, no sleet or icing...yet

You'd hear it just by cracking a window if there's enough to matter, it makes a distinctive sound when it falls.
