Cities offer more jobs and opportunities. Your income is capped in a small town just by the volume of the money supply. Income potential is far greater in a big city. You can commute, but that takes away from your quality of life.

I used to say that what we need are small towns where professionals can live without taking too much of a financial hit. But in reality it probably won't work. The town would be flooded with city-minded people and would change the character of the area.

What we need are wholesome, family-minded people willing to sacrifice future wealth/income to move to small towns and find something productive to do there that fulfills the need of the town, supplanting or at least boosting those dying areas. Which is a pipe dream on a large scale, although I fully expect there will be intentional migration like that in the future, if not already happening.

I have needed very urgent medical care and chemo that was taken care of very competently in a town of 80,000. The more complex surgeries I have had I went to big City

I’m ten minutes away from a town with a population barely over 2000, and that’s just the way I want it.

That's going to be my wife (no pics) and I when we retire. All I need is decent internet (thanks, Elon) and some place to swing through to grab takeout.

If you break down in a redneck area, they will help you get a tow or fix your vehicle.

If you break down in a woke area, they will take your shite.

They both have their pluses and minuses. If you're looking to escape crime in a small town, you'll likely be disappointed. You probably won't get carjacked, but property crimes are as bad or worse as in urban areas. You may have to get creative to have any kind of lucrative career, and to have educational and cultural opportunities for your kids. If you don't have local roots, people can be standoffish. OTOH it's great if you like the outdoors. It sure is nice being able to get to work in ten minutes. If I really want to get away, there's airport an 45 minutes from here that connects me with anywhere in the world.

The problem in the South is that there is a very, very little ground between big city ills and small town blight.

I would love to live in a small, clean, safe town that has amenities (restaurants, coffee shops, grocery stores, etc...), but that really doesn't exist anywhere that I've ever seen in the South. Pretty much every small town here in run down and full of poors.

Ruston, Natchitoches, St Francisville. All have poors but also some really nice amenities.

If you can manage to find a work from home job that lets you live outside of a big metro that is the best of both worlds.

What state are you looking in? There are nice, safe, small towns in every state in the south.

He said less than 100,000. There's lots of places under that number is good health care.

Athens GA for instance has not one, but two full size full service hospitals. And if Athens is too big for you, drive 15 minutes out of Athens to the East or South, and you can be in a tiny town and still 15 minutes away from full service health care.

A small town is like 10,000 or less. Maybe even 5,000.

And these places are inferior environments that breed ignorance and isolation.

You can live in a small town and still be close to these things. You just need to know where to look.

I live in an area that’s still a bit country, but only 20 minutes from downtown Charleston. Not bad at all.

Small towns have the brain drain syndrome. The kids that grow up there that are worth a shite move on and have no desire to come back. What's left are the dying off elderlies and the people who aren't worth a shite who never left [for the most part].

These small towns will have to be gentrified by migration as you suggested; they won't survive on their own.

I lived in Lexington once for a while. Not for me. I grew in a town of 10K people, moved to a town of 4K people to a town of 8K people. Where I live now has34K, which is way big enough.

And I bet a lot of those people are happier than than their yuppy counterparts in large cities.

Why does a place have to be inferior just because it's small? Don't get me wrong, there are a ton of small shitty places around here (see my previous post), but it doesn't have to be that way.
