Or
3) I cut my grass every 5 days, and the rock was brown and the size of a golf ball. It was kicked in the middle of my yard.

This looks like exactly the video I needed when I was reassembling.
There are several more videos on youtube about the timing on Honda GCV engines. You may be able to set the timing with out too much disassembly. Get the engine to TDC and rotate the cam gear to line up the marks.

Just admit you weren't looking and hit a sewer cap.

Where I live, these don’t exist. I have a septic tank buried about 5 feet underground.

You have to come back and tell us what you found. I have a couple of down voters who need to be told to suck it.

Yeah I would like to know the outcome as well. The guy that posted this 5 days ago was probably right.
Oh wait that was me

Unless you screwed up putting it back together. Then it could also be a timing problem

Its like a $300 mower. Just buy a new one

But... but... there’s no such thing as a timing problem on a lawnmower!

Well, I'm fairly old, but Briggs engines had a cam that worked on a gear on the crank. If you didn't line up the dot on the cam with the dot on the crank, you most certainly had a timing issue. A valve timing issue more precisely. Still a timing issue.
You were right with this post. The Honda GX160 commercial grade engines have a dot on both crank and cam gear you line up like the Briggs. The Honda GVC160 consumer grade engines use the timing belt like the OP has.

Obviously, 300 bucks won’t even buy a hooker and blow for the average OT baller’s routine Friday night, but some folks like myself have a problem with sticking 3 bills in the dumpster. Some folks like myself like working on stuff, figuring out the problem, and fixing it. Some folks won’t be totally fricked, robbed, mugged, raped, and killed when their car takes a shite on them on some lonely road.
Can’t hurt, making yourself more resourceful, can it?

You sound like you have first hand experience with this, and came with the real help. I guess in a situation like this, it’s all in who you listen to. Hell, it could still end up being a gunked up carb or some shite. Dude has to come back and tell us if he finds it.

It is belt-driven with a little crank. I matched the notches up on the rod clamp and the crank just as they were before.
He's got a timing problem if the only thing he lined up was the rod cap.
If he can get the timing marks all lined up it should run. If it runs shitty I would look closely at the governor and spring re-installation. Props to the guy for tearing into it and trying to fix it.

I don't have any help to offer but wanted to point out what a birch you are for blaming the septic guy for you not looking where you're mowing.

So when do we get the verdict?

Well, I put it in back in the correct timing as far as I can tell. Still not firing. It’s getting gas, just not sparking.
I'm only off today, so I’m not spending all day messing with it.
Will resume in a few days.
