I don't know anything about how the valves are actuated in this engine, or if it even has valves, but I'm going to say you have a timing issue of some sort. If that is the case though, it's highly unlikely that the motor ever ran after you put it together.

Whether it has actual valves and a cam, or if it is more like reeds in a 2 stroke engine, the backfire you are having, indicates a timing issue of some kind. Is it backfiring through the carb, or kicking a flame out the exhaust?

It’s backfiring out of the exhaust

So that tells you that whatever serves for the exhaust valve is open when it should be closed on the power stroke. Your engine is firing, combusting the fuel/air, but because the exhaust valve is open, instead of that explosion driving the piston down in the power stroke, it is shooting out the exhaust port.

Does the engine have valves, and a cam that actuates them?

No such thing as a timing issue on a lawnmower. Could be the auto choke, valves out of adjustment, or trash in the jet of the carburetor. I had a toro that would do this sometime. Take it apart and clean it and it was fine for a while. Ended up buying a new carburetor for about $30.00 dollars and installed a fuel filter in the line and have never had this problem again

Yes, it has an OHC

Have you cleaned the carburetor after turning the mower upside down?? You probably have/had all kinds of shite running through those tiny jets

Is the cam turned by a chain, belt, or is it geared with the crank some way? There had to be timing marks on it I would think. Whether it was a dot, a line, a notch, something, right?

It is belt-driven with a little crank. I matched the notches up on the rod clamp and the crank just as they were before.

I may just need to take the damn carb apart and clean it. shite was pouring out of it when I was turning the motor upside down and all that.

Well, I'm fairly old, but Briggs engines had a cam that worked on a gear on the crank. If you didn't line up the dot on the cam with the dot on the crank, you most certainly had a timing issue. A valve timing issue more precisely. Still a timing issue.

So on a 4 stroke motor, you could easily be 180 out, unless you know if the crank was in the power stroke or the exhaust stroke position.

Yep. Clean the carb and only use non-ethanol gas and I’ll bet it runs fine.

Pretty sure that has already been checked off as a possibility.

Watch this youtube video of installing a new timing belt to verify you have your timing marks right when it was reassembled.

This looks like exactly the video I needed when I was reassembling. I’m gonna pull it all apart and try again.

If you didn't already know all the TDC and timing mark information in the video, timing is almost undoubtedly the issue. Good luck.

2 things from this thread.

1) you're either trashy and only mow your grass every 6 months

2) you're blind and can't see a big arse rock in your path.

4)most of those who talk shite, don't have the stones to even attempt what he is doing
