The 440i is a stupid-great sport sedan but if the priority is to derive a world-class sports car, IMO it just takes a quick test drive to walk away feeling like the Cayman/Boxster format is actually a bargain and in a class all alone. .

I get that its all about what you're looking for. Porsches are a great drive. Its really the Audi that I'm not a fan of and is more similar to the BMW in style/purpose.

That mustang will be a rattle trap within two years. Guaranteed.

Owned a 2013 base GT for 3 years, was still tight (no rattling or air leaks at high speeds).

Currently own a 2015 premium GT and there is only on part that rattled, the passenger seat belt receiver rattled against the center console. A small strip (an inch?) of felt tape on the inside fixed that.

The older mustangs were rattle traps for sure, but 2011+ Ford has really picked up their game.

Bang for buck sports car, its hard to beat the Camaro/Mustangs. The newest version automatics are capable of running high 11's stock. Not bad for a ~35k car with a warranty.

My 1986 Porsche 944 Turbo was the fastest car made by Porsche at the time. You can buy one of those and pay as low as $8K

I think that new Volvo SUV is a 4 banger also.
Fun Fact:
All Volvo cars are exclusively available with 4 cylinder engines.

Our turbo (T5) is plenty fast. 250hp is enough no matter how you shake it. It's got zero soul, but it's beautiful.

Great car BUT it was NOT the fastest Porsche in 1986.

The 951 2.5 liter turbo 4 still bangs out pretty reliable and user friendly power though

For those specific models you're purchasing luxury and status, not performance.

As you've pointed out, Nissan/Honda/Toyota offer V6 family Sedans for almost half the price and are faster.

It's all in what you prioritize.

Agreed, the ATS is a low 14 second car stock, high 13's with a tune.

The ATS-V (with 464hp) is a mid 12 second car. There'd be no reason to spend the extra cash on the ATS-V if all the ATS needed was a tune to be pretty much even with it.

The drive is the bottom line. Modern turbo engines are simply amazing. The only reason to feel nostalgic about older, bigger, normally aspirated engines is sound. Modern turbo engines produce very wide flat power curves and are amazingly flexible.

While not small engines at 3.6/3.8L I wish every turbo detractor could drive a 911 Turbo S or GTR (hard) once. The power delivery when you hammer the throttle in any gear at any speed is stupifying.

While I understand and have often quoted "there is no replacement for displacement" it really isn't true.

It’s primo.

I'm still pretty young. 26. Still have my college car, an '05 s2000, kind of run down after putting 75k+ miles on it. Considering student debt, and the like, I'd recommend the motorcycle route. Biggest bang per buck by a mile. Triumph Daytona 675R 0-60 in less than 2.5 seconds if you can keep the front wheel on the ground. Garage it and have a banger like my car outside for rainy days.

Price as well. There's a reason why you need to spend roughly double the price on a vehicle powered by a smaller turbo engine to run equal with a larger N/A engine.

No doubt modern turbo engines have come a long way, and you reach a point even with larger N/A engines that you need to go forced induction to reach higher performance levels, but if you're looking for an entry level sports car larger N/A engines will be your best bet.

Interesting, this just happened in 2018. Sadly I expect to see this happen for other models. Rumors are the pony cars will be losing their V8s soon and will be replaced with turbo 6s. Will be interesting to see what kind of numbers they'll put out.

Paid $22k for my NA Civic Si 10 years ago. That’s actually a lot of bang for your buck.
