Another weekend of road construction is scheduled for a stretch of Interstate 10 through Slidell to near the Louisiana-Mississippi state line, and that means motorists headed to Mississippi and the Gulf Coast should build in extra travel time.
The right lane of eastbound I-10 from just north of Gause Boulevard to the West Pearl River bridge, near the I-10 Welcome Center, will be closed from 6 p.m. Friday (June 19) until Monday (June 22) at 10 a.m., the state Department of Transportation and Development said.
The left lane of westbound I-10 in the same stretch will close at 6 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. But all westbound travel lanes will be open each of those days from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m., the highway department said.
While the eastbound closure will make traveling to Mississippi or points east tricky, the unrestricted westbound travel between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. each day should make getting home a little easier.
The alternate route that DOTD suggests around the work area is U.S. 90 through St. Tammany Parish and into Mississippi, where motorists can again re-enter I-10.
In addition to the I-10 lane closures., the left lane of eastbound I-12 will be closed between the I-10/I-12 merge and the I-59 overpass in St. Tammany rom 5 a.m. Friday to 11 a.m. Monday.
The lane closures are part of a $40 million road construction project. The weekend lane closures have snarled traffic through the construction zone, in some cases adding hours to trips, motorists have complained.
The construction project is scheduled for completion in summer 2016.

I think someone mentioned that there was construction going on in Mobile. Might want to avoid that or take that in consideration.

Thursday, July 2 I think we may try to hit the road about noon. I don't want to even imagine how bad its going to be coming back on Sunday.

No way i would leave at 2. Been fudged too many times by dumbasses who are too scared to barrel through a tunnel

I've never seen traffic in the Bankhead Tunnel unless there's a wreck in the thing.

It backs up just as bad on Fridays as the Wallace tunnel now. Its no secret anymore. Cochran Bridge and the Causeway back up too. Leave at 4. Leaving at 2 would put you there at exactly the wrong time.

I went through it a few weeks ago on a Friday at 5:30 without any traffic. Bankhead that is.

THIS. I'm amazed that more people coming from LA/MS don't detour on to I-65 over to I-165 and take the Cochrane bridge about 4 miles north of downtown Mobile. It's only about a 10 minute detour driving wise but saves a ton of time on a Friday afternoon by avoiding the tunnel back up. You end up coming out where the Bankhead tunnel traffic comes out on the Causeway.

On the way back from Memorial Day weekend I took the other bridge. Obviously, I can't say how much time I saved but it took maybe 15 mins to get around all of it that way whereas I was going about 1 mile every 15 mins before.

I'd leave at 2. That would put you over there around 3:30. Won't be any worse than 5:30
