Scruffy, one of my good friends bragged to me about having Bluetooth capable window blinds

So they just say Alexa, close the blinds .. and it connects to the blinds and closes them

And I said that is by far the laziest thing I’ve ever heard. Get your arse up and shut the goddamn blinds .

How poor are you exactly that you don't have a butler do this for you?

Would depend heavily on the appliance. Anything in particular you’re curious about?

Refrigerator.

I was in a doc office last week when I overheard an older lady complaining to her husband she didn't like going on vacations because she would be without her bidet and smart bed.

Yeah, please don't. That would be kind of weird.

Refrigerator would be way down the list of appliances I would care about connecting to the internet, but just to pitch a bit of usefulness, if it has internal temperature sensors, it would be nice if the power went out while I was out of town to be able to track what my internal temperature rises to so I can know how to deal with it when I get back.

Some of these features are so damn stupid.

I bought a house with "smart" thermostats. I can adjust the temp manually, but in order to set a schedule, I have to have an app connected to the internet.

I got a free alexa years ago, never really talked to it or tried to get info from now. I actually tried to talk to it the other day for a list it displayed on the ad and it didn't respond, so I guess not talking to it for years killed it. Clock still works though, which is what I use it for.

I will never understand people who use all these internet connected devices in their homes.

We have a smart frig. Connection to generator won’t work during power outages.

If it’s connected to the internet, it can be hacked.

What would a hacked toaster or lightbulb do?

The fridge is connected to the power, including whatever nonsense smart features, no?

Which would all come back online once the power came back on, which would then start logging and broadcasting the temperature, which should be the warmest point.

And you’d have no idea how long it was at that temperature. Sounds very unhelpful. Could just use common sense instead.

If the powers out more than 6-8 hours or so without opening the fridge, you need to toss the perishables.
